LEV'ELING nevica4 specification of Letters Patent.
Application led May 25,A 1911. -Serial No.' 629,283.
TaaZZ @from it may concern.'
device for taking leve elevation of another embodiment of the in-v Be it known that I, JAMES ROAKE, a citi- '.zen of the United States, residing at Oregon City, in the county of Clackamas andState of Oregon, have inventednew and useful Im-- provements in Leveling Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention pertains to leveling instruments; land it has 4for its object to provide a simple, com
s in street grading, laying sewers, providing foundations' for buildings, etc., the said device ,embodying a weight that isadapted when properly set to move the thereby 'obviating the necessity ofreadjust- .ing the device when moved from one point to another.
Other objects and 'advantageous features of the invention will be fully understood from the following' description and claim when the same are read in connection `with the drawings, accompanying and form-ing part of this specification, in which:
Figure 1 is a'plan, Fig.-2 a longitudinal vertical section with parts in elevation, and
Fig. 3 a transverse verticalsection of one emthat my novel bodimentv of my invention. Fig. 4'is a side vention. Fig. 5 is a view, partly in elevation and partly. in vertical section taken at a right angle to Fig. 4.
Referring by letter. to said drawings, more particularly to Figs. ll, 2 andj3 thereof: A- is the main frame of the device, and' B'jB `are screws that bear in the frame sides a,
are pointedV lat theirinner ends and are equipped with jam or lock 'nuts b. Fulcrumed betweentlie inner ends of the screws B is a tube C having at one end an eye piece c, and at its opposite end a cross-wire d; The
term tube is here employed in its broadsense and is intended to comprehend a plain tube such las illustrated, a telescope or any other type o f tube consonant with the purpose of my invention. Contained in a metal case D. that is fixed on the upper side of the tube C is an ordinary spirit level E, 'and' joined through a shank c with the underside of the said tube C is an open frame F which extends in the direction of the length of the4 tube and is Xed with respect thereto so' as to always move therewith. Fixed in the forward and .rear portions vof the` open fname F are the ends of a longitudinal threaded shaft G, and mounted and adapted act and inexpensive.v placed upon a tube to its correct position,A
y 'The' capacity of` yandl to be adj ust-ed. on the said'threaded shaft is an interiorly threaded balancing weight the exterior of which ispreferably roughf occasion demands adjustment of, the weight Patented Jan. 9,1912.l
on the shaft in; the direction ofthe length,-
thereof.
In the use of the instrument the same is suitable support, whereupon the weight I-I will immediately bringv the level to atrue position, and the line of vsight from the eyev piece c and across the VWire d will form a true horizontal line and can be projected any reasonable distance as re quired.
the weight I-I to be adjusted on shaft G in the directionlength of the tube is advantageous since 'without such adjustmentthe balancing of of the 4 the tube C on the pivots would have to be very exact and would lbe difficult-of accomplishment. In other words the weight when correctly positioned on the screw'will bring the tube'to its correct position which position will, be indicated by the spirit leve] It will be gathered from the foregoing device issimple and ine'xpensive 1n construction, and that the arrangement of the balancing weight and the frame in which thelsame is carried in the main frame-renders thedevice very compact, while permitting of access being readily gained to the, weight for the purpose' of adjusting the same in its frame.
The mountingof the weight H'on screw G permits longitudinal adjustment of the weight ina line parallel to the axis of tube C, and it will also be noted that sa'id weight H is disp'osed on the perpendicularl line of center of gravity from the pivots formed by the screws B. See Fig. 2:
"In the modification shown 1n Figs. 4 and 5, the main frame A differs-only in form from the frame A of Figs. l-3, and the tube l -A of Figs. 1 toB has a dat .bottom surface,
and is adapted to 'be rested support, whilel the frame A of Figs. 4 and 5. is mounted on a .plate M, and is Vadapted to be rotated on a vertical axis perpendicuon any suitable lar to the line of sight inthe tube C.,4 Said frame Ais provided with a depending por-- the instrument when in use.
tion m that is let into a. circular aperture in the' plate M, and is connected to said plate by collar and lock nut, as shown in Fig. 5. It Will `also be noticed that. the plate M is provided with lugs p forl the connection of suitable legs r'to form a tripod support for For the pui'- pose of restricting rotary movement of the frame A onthe plate M, a clampingv means is provided made up of a shoe s arranged to bear against the circular depending portion yof theframe A', and a screw t that bears in the plate M and against the said shoe.
When the construction shown in Figs. 4;
.and 5 is employed, the instrument obviouslyv can be rotated'on a single resting place, and
`the operator can get theu level of any object Within range.
Having described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters-Patent,
A leveling instrument' comprising a main frame having sides, a vertically-swinging' sighting tube mounted on pivots between said sides of the main frame, a spirit level arranged on said. sighting tube, an open frame extending in the direction of the length of'the sighting tube and connected and movable therewith and disposed hetween the sides ofthe main frame, a longitudinally-disposed threaded shaft fixed at its ends in the forward and rear portions of the open frame, and an interiorly threaded balancing Weight mounted on said shaft and capable of adjustment in the direction of the length thereof.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in presence of two subscribing `Witnesses.
kJAMES ROAKE.
