Description

TiniTan sTaTns PATENT carica.'
GRAY Gr. I-IOIIADAY, OF
PORTSMOUTH, VIRGINIA.
WINDOW-LOOK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented J an. 9, 1912.
Application filed March 4, 1911. Serial No. 612,294.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE PARKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Portsmouth, in the county of Norfolk and State of Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in lVindowLocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to window locks, and the principal object of the same is to provide a lock that will firmly fasten a sash to a window frame, yet which may be readily released to permit unrestrained use of the sash when desired.
In carrying out the object of the invention generally stated above it is contemplated forming the improved lock of a stationary sash member and a hinged window frame member, the frame member adapted to be rocked to interlocking binding engagement with the sash member, a latch being employed for holding the frame member and the sash member in locking engagement.
In the practical application of the invention it will be understood, of course, that the essential features thereof are necessarily susceptible of changes in details and structural arrangements, one preferred and simple embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings wherein Figure l is a fragmentary perspective view of a window frame and one sash, showving the sash locked to the frame by the irnproved lock. Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional view taken on the line 2-2, Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar View taken on the line 3 3, Fig. l. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view taken on the line 4 4, Fig. 5. Fig. 5 is a detail fragmentary view of one side member of a window sash showing one member of the improved lock attached thereto.V
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals, 1 designates one of the longitudinal side members of a window sash which has a longitudinal recess 2 formed in its outer surface in which a flat elongated plate 3 is mounted, said plate having a longitudinal edge projecting beyond the surface of the side member l of the sash and arranged on an incline and provided with ratchet teeth 4.
The side member 5 of the window casing adjacent the longitudinal side 1 of the window sash has a plate 6 seated on its outer surface adjacent the bottom thereof, said plate 6 having a hinged engagement 7 with a fiat elongated leaf 9 whose free longitudinal edge is toothed as indicated at 10 complemental to the teeth of plate 3. The toothed edge of plate 9 is on an incline. The upper end of leaf l0 is reduced to provide a latching lip 11 that is adapted to be frictionally engaged by a pivotally mounted latch 12 carried by the member 5 of the window casing to hold leaf 10 in position to engage plate 3 of the window sash when said leaf 10 is rocked away from plate 6. The inclined outer edges of plate 3 and leaf l0 are arranged in opposition to each other so that when their teeth are in interlocking engagement, an attempt to raise the window sash will cause plate 3 and leaf 10 to bind as well asto cause their teeth to interlock.
In use assuming the window sash to be lowered it will be seen that by rocking leaf 10 away from plate 6 the teeth of leaf 10 and plate 3 will be brought into interlocking engagement, after which latch 12 is brought into engagement with lip 11 of leaf 9 there by holding said leaf in its locking position. To release the improved lock, latch 12 is rocked from engagement with lip 1l, after which leaf 9 may be readily swung from engagement with plate 4l through the medium of its hinged connection with plate 6 so that it will not interfere with the raising of the window sash.
What I claim as my invention is l. A sash lock comprising a vertically are ranged flat plate carried by a window sash, said plate having one longitudinal edge pro jecting laterally from said sash, said projecting edge being inclined and provided with teeth, a vertically arranged plate carried by a window frame, a flat leaf hinged thereto and having its free longitudinal edge provided with teeth for interlocking engagement with the teeth of the sash plate, a lip projecting from one end of said leaf, and a latch carried by said frame for engaging said lip to lock the leaf in engagement with the sash plate.
2. A sash lock comprising a plate carried by a window sash, ,said pate having one edge inclined and projecting laterally from said sash, a second plate carried by a window frame, a leaf hinged to said frame plate In testimony whereof I hereunto a'ix my and having one edge adapted for locking ensignature in presence of two Witnesses. Uafrement with the inclined edcfe of the sash };D lzibte, sad leaf having a lip prnjecting from GEORGE PARKER' 5 one end: and a latch ivotally connected to Witnesses: v
the Window frame an adapt-ed for locking GRAY G. HOLLADAY, engagement With sald lip. CHAS. W. DYER.
