UNITED. s'racrns {TENT OFFICE.
ABRAHAM C. FISHER, OF'NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOLR, TO THE J. E, MERGOTT COM BAG-FASTENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 9, 1912.
Application filed May 12, 191i. Serial no. 626,821.
I To all whom it mag concern:
Be it known that I, ABRAHAM C. Frsnnn,
a citizen of the United States, residingin' the city of New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Fasteners, of which the following is a full, clear, andexact description, such as will'enable others skilled in the art to-which it pertains to make, construct, and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to letters of reference marked thereon, forming a part of this specilication.
In the use of bags, pocket books, and the like, much diiiiculty has been encountered in overcoming the objection raised by those who use such articles, to the spreading of the bag framemembers when the contents of suchbag or pocket book are such as to so distend the sides as to make the closing of the bag or pocket book difficult. The principal objection arises from the fact that as ordinarily constructed, but a single catch or lock is provided in the center of the'loag frame members for holding the same together, leaving the ends of the frame to be sprung apart by overcrowding the interior of the bag, with resulting annoyance and loss. Inorder to eliminate these evils and overcome these objections, I have devised a new look, which has all the advantages of manipulation of a center lock, and yet conibineswith it, the feature of locking the bag frame at two points.
In carrying outmy invention, I make use of the structure illustrated in the accomof Fig. 2, and looking in the'direction indicated by the arrow; and Fig. 4 represents a similar View showing the frame partially open with the latch up.
Similar letters of reference refer to like p rts throughout the specification and drawings.
A bag frame fastener made in acct ordinary or desired form of frame. That shown in the drawings, consists of the two ance .Wl th my invention, may be applied to any hinged members a and b of substantially the shape shown in Fig. 3. To the middle portions of these members a and b I secure the fasteners or catches a and (Z, substantially as.
illustrated in Fig. 2, or in any convenient or desired manner. The fasteners or catches c and d are substantially identical 1n shape,
and a description of one will suffice for both.
Each fastener is made up of the rigid base 6 provided withthe upwardly and angularly extending knob f. The base 6 is provided on its under side which comes in contact with the frame member, when the same is secured thereto, with integral nibs g, which are inserted through the apertures common in bag frame, and riveted down in the usual manner to secure the fastener rigidly'to the frame. \Vith this construction, the two hinged members a and I) always come together with a very pronounced snap, due to the spring of the hinged members a and b.
In my improved device, I provide a second catch or latch for additionally holding the jaws together, which catch or latch is operated independently of the fasteners c and d. In the specific formillustrated, I provide a catch or latch' which consists of a plate 71. provided at one end with a tubular bearing 2' which surroundsand swings on a reduced circular portion of the base 6 of the fastener c, which is secured to the frame member a. The other end of the, plate is provided with an upturned integral finger piece ,6, and an aperture k, which takes over and has holding engagement with the stud Z which is secured to the frame member Z) in any convenient manner.
Experience has demonstrated that the orgamzation above described is a highly efiicient one, and while the device described is the preferred embodiment of my present invention, i. do not care to restrict myself. to the exact details of constructlon, combina-- tion, and arrangement herein set forth, it
being obvious that minor variations thereof not involving the exercise of invention may he made by any skilled mechanic, and such departures from what is herein described and claimed not involving invention, I con-- sider as within the scope and terms of my claims.
I claim:
.1. In combination, two members movable relatively to each other, knobs carried by from the movement of said knobs.
said members and adapted to engage with each other for holding said members toget-her, and a catch secured to one of said knobs for additionally holding said memberstogether and independentlyv operated 2. In combination, two hinged frame members, lmobs carried by said frame members, and adapted to snap past each other for; holding said frame members: together,
I and a locking device 'pivotally secured to' one of said knobs for additionally holding said frame members and independently. operatedfrom said knobs.
. of a catch member mounted on each of said ,3. In a purse orbagfas'tener, the combi nation with a pair of hinged frame members,
frame members for mutual cooperation and adapted to engage-with each other for ho1d-; ing said frame members together, and a catch for additionally holding said members together pivotally mounted upon one of said Copies of this patent may be obtained for catch members and operated independently from said catch members. I
4. In a urse or bag -.Eastener,; the combination wit bers,-of a catch member mounted on each of 25 a pair of hinged frame memsaid' frame members for mutual cooperation and adapted to engage with each other for" holding said frame members together, each catch member comprisinga base having an angularly disposed engaging. enlargement extending therefrom, and a pivoted catch fox-additionally holding said members together, said catch being pivotallysecured to .the base of one of saidcatch members and operated independently from said catch five cents each, by' addressing the Commissionerof Patents,
