mnrnon or APPLYING urn-COVERING.
The ordinary rusting action at damp earth on metal pipe is well known, but in the alkali regions of the western States and Territories the earth has developed an acute chemical action not only on buried pipe lines p recently installed there, but also on all ordinary forms of protective covering for such pipe lines, whic destroys the covering and exposed ipes in a comparatively few months.
I Various arms of covering for such pipe lines have been tried in these regions without success heretofore, and hundreds of miles of such covering have been taken ofi' as useless after being in 'place onlyacomparatively short time. My invention, forminga pure mineral covering hermetically sealing the pipes within it, has successfully withstood the action of the most alkaline regions.
The best formof covering at present known to me and the best method of applying it are-,illustrated in the accompanying sheet of drawings, in which:
Figure 1 shows a 'por' with the first element of my preferred form of coating being applied thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged cross section of same. Fig. 3 shows the same. with the second element of the coating being spirally wound on in p0:
' sition. Fig. 4.is an enlarged cross section of same; Fig. 5 shows the final coating being applied, and Fig. 6 shows an enlarged cross section of a pipeline with my finished coat ing-in place thereon.
Throughout the drawings like reference numbers indicate like parts.

position such as mineral pitch or asphaltums, which I apply to the pipe preferably after the sect1ons thereofhave beenjointed together and are practically" in their final 'osition. This first coating may be applie by use of a brush 3, or in an other convenient manner. While the aspha tum is still warm,
' soft and sticky, I wind. on spirally a strip orfstrips of asbestos paper 4, which are usually about one sixteenth of an inch thick,
and about six inches. wide, and which have been just previously saturated with hot-aS-x phaltum. The adjacent edges of' the strip overlap, preferably about half their width,
so that as a result thepi e has .avcoverin of doubless thickness of t is material. his
strip is preferably wound on while the as might be applied cold,.but'the best results, Y i
follow when it is put on hot. -After winding on this strip, I prefer to finish ofi'the covering with another, outer coating of pure asphaltum also applied hot, by a brush ..3: as-
before, or otherwise, preamaiyqaefaaahe asphaltu'i'n on the asbestos pa eras had time to cool or harden. Theres'ultis an integral, air tight, water tight,- acid and alkali proof covering of pure mineral substances, asbestos and asphaltum, which is also tough and strong enough to withstand ordinary shocks, andthe attacks of insects or other living organisms aswell as the chemical action of the surrounding earth and fluids.
My invention might be applied to the separate lengths of pipe before they are connected-together, but the best results are obtained by making the coverin' absolutely continuous, as can be doneonly y applying it" to thev com leted pipe line when in, or
