RICHARD ROSCCHACKI,
or CLEVELAND, on'io Letters Patent lilo. 101,166, dated March 22, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN APPARATUS FOR PITGHING- BARRELS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters' Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, RICHARD RosocHAouI, Aof Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Apparatus for Pitching Ba'rrels; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings making a part of thisspecication, in which- Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical section Figure 2, a plan View ;l and Figure 3, a det-ached sectional elevation ofthe plug, rod, and lever. y
This invention has for its object to-remove from beer-barrels the pitch lining which is usually added to them for purposes of tightness, when such lining becomes inoperative through age, in order to replace it with fresh lining.
'lhe invention' consists in an apparatus for conducting a blast of air', heated by the furnace used for melting fresh pitch, and also for conducting the products of combustion of such furnace, when desired, into the barrel, in order that it may melt the'old lining, and for catching the melted .old pitch as it runs out of the barrel, and conduct-ing it to the tank containing the fresh pitch, and for holding the barrel in 'a position convenient for the performance of these operations.
In the drawings- A is a cylindrical furnace inclosed within an outer casing, F.
B is an annular tank surrounding the casing F except at the front, and used for melting pitch.
C is a fan for blowing air past the furnace up through the casing F.
a is a flue for conducting ofi' products of combustion froni the furnace.
D D are holders for sustaining the barrel in position above the furnace.
b is a nozzle opening out of the top of the furnace, and intended to be introduced into the bung-hole 0l' the barrel when the latter' is placed in the holder, for the purpose of conducting the blast from the fan heated by the furnace, into the barrel, and melting the oldpitch lining thereof.
E is a channel surrounding the nozzle, and having for its function to catch the melted pitch as it runs out of the barrel.
From the channel, the pitch flows through the spout e into the tank B.
A damper, l', is fitted to an orifice, a, iu the top of the furnaces.
When a beer-barrel is in the holders, the orifice n is kept closed to prevent the products of combustion from the furnace from passing into the barrel and communicating an unpleasant taste to thcbeer. But when a barrel for coal-oil or other material not edible or portable is on the holders, the orifice ninay be opened so as to get the benefits of the products of combustion in melting the lining of the barrel in addition to the liot` air.
The old lining having been entirely removed in this manner, the barrel is taken from the holders, and held under the nozzle m of the tank, whence it receives as much fresh pitch as may be necessary to thoroughly coat it.
The nozzle lm is ,furnished with a stopple, i, Worked by a vertical rod, k, and lever' l, the latter heilig above the. tank.
Having thus described my invention,
What' I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. 'Ihe combination with the furnace and casing of the holders, nozzle b and channel, in the inauner described, and for th'e purpose of removing the pitch linings of beer barrels.
2. 'llie combination of the casing F, pipe l), chan,- ncl E, and spout c, in the manner described, and for the purpose set forth.
3. The combination of the tank B with the casing F and furnace A, substantially as described.
