Be it known that I, KARL lVmKnRsHEIM, a subject of the Emperor of Germany, residing in the cit-y, county, and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Hat-Conformators, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates generally to hat conformators and more particularly to one which has for its object to provide a con formator which will be strong and durable, easily and comfortably adjusted to the head and also thoroughly healthful and sanitary.
ith these various objects in view, my invention consists in the novel features of construction and combination hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this specification:Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a conformator constructed in accordance with my invention, certain parts being shown in elevation and other parts being omitted for the sake of clearness, said parts being shown in their normal positions when the device is not in use. Fig. 2 is a top plan view, the cover being removed. Fig. 8 is a detail view of the frame or ring for holding the paper to the cover. Fig. 1 is a top plan view of the cover. Fig. 5 is a detail sectional view on the line 55 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a detail view of the combined supporting spring and wedge plate.
In carrying out my invention I employ a frame consisting of a base ring A, top plate B, and supporting standards C, there being four such standards which are connected to the base ring and extend upwardly and inwardly as shown and are connected to the top plate for the purpose of supporting the same in its proper position. The base ring A is provided with suitable feet A, each foot being connected to the base ring by means of the same bolt which connects the supporting standard. The base ring A is preferably made of channeled metal and the inner and outer flanges thereof are slotted as shown at A and working through said slots are the lower horizontal members D of the keys D, there being preferably fifty-two of said keys, the series extending entirely around the entire ring, the upper horizontal members D working in slots or grooves B produced in the top plate B and these upper members terminating in upwardly projecting pins D These members Specification of Letters Patent.

D converge as shown and the ends bear against an oval shaped cap plate E, which is secured centrally upon the top plate B and is provided with the upwardly projecting centering pins E. The outer ends of the lower horizontal members project beyond the base ring and they are rounded and notched as shown at D for the purpose of receiving the endless coiled spring band F, which surrounds the entire series of keys and provides the proper spring pressure for maintaining the entire series of keys in their normally, inwardly projecting positions and as before stated the ends D are in contact with the cap plate E.
The device it will be understood is placed upon the head in order to obtain the correct shape of the head and when the vertical portions of the keys come into contact with the forehead, the said keys will automatically adjust themselves to the exact shape of the head, the endless coiled spring band F holding the said keys in contact.
Now so far as I am aware all of the keys employed in the construction of conformators have been of metal and consequently wherever they come into cont-act with the forehead there is more or less danger of the said keys becoming corroded or rendered unsanitary and in the continued use of the conformator disease is liable to be communicated owing to the condition of the said metallic keys and with the object of avoiding this condition I provide a strip of ebony G, which is attached to each key at the lower ends of the vertical member and preferably projects below the elbow or bend of the said key and it is obvious that it is only the ebony portion of the key which comes into contact with the head and consequently all danger of the key becoming corroded or covered with verdigris is avoided and a. careful wiping off of the ebony strips will always maintain them in a sanitary condition.
A rim H is fastened to the base plate for the purpose of holding the keys in place and in practice I prefer to make this rim of aluminum, suitable bolts or screws H being employed to secure the said rim. A ring H is fastened to the top plate by screws H the upper members of the keys sliding beneath said ring. In order to relieve the head from direct pressure of the rigid parts of the device, I provide a double-bowed spring I, which is attached to the underside of the top plate B and carries a concaved disk I, which fits upon the top of the head and the elasticity of this spring bow relieves the head of pressure upon it of the rigid parts above described.
In order to produce the paper pattern showing the shape of the head, I employ a cover K hinged at K and normally held elevated above the pointed ends of the keys by means of a spring L which engages a catch L arranged at the front end of a ring hereinafter referred to, said catch L being at the front end of the cover K. This cover is made of metal and has a facing of cork K held therein by means of clips K said clips being fastened to the sides of the cover at definite points. This cork facing is to permit the pointed ends of the keys to pass through the paper pattern into the cork thereby making a complete perforation of the pattern. For the purpose of holding the paper against the underside of the cover and against the cork face, I provide the metal ring K which is secured to the cover adjacent the hinged end and at its free end carries the catch L as before described and this spring catch L carries a pin L which is adapted to engage a socket or recess arranged at the front end of the cover. Upon the top side of the cover is produced a housing K having a cover K therefor and pivoted in this housing are the levers K normally held apart by means of a spring K M indicates a combined handle and wedge plate, which is attached to the top plate at the front side and provides a suitable handle for gripping the device when it is desired to release the spring L and at the same time bring down the cover by means of the hand levers K", it being understood that as the said hand levers are pressed inwardly they engage the incline sides of the combined handle and Wedge plate M and the cover is consequently forced down upon the pointed ends of the keys and in so doing the said pointed ends are forced through the paper, which is held between the cork face of the cover and the ring K*, said ring as before stated being fastened by means of the catch L. After this operation has been completed the hand levers are permitted to spring outwardly and the cover is then lifted completely back, the ring opened and the paper removed. Another sheet of paper is then inserted and the device is ready for use once more.
The quick and easy manner in which the sheet of paper can be placed in and removed from the device is an important feature of my invention and constitutes an improvement over any of the devices heretofore used.
What I claim is 1. In a hat conformator, the combination with a frame comprising a base ring, a top plate and supporting standards, of a series of keys arranged within said frame and a spring cushion arranged upon the bottom of the top plate and adapted to bear upon the head, as set forth.
2. In a hat conformator, the combination with a main frame constructed as described, of a cover hinged thereto, a series of keys arranged within the frame, a spring arranged upon the underside of the frame, and a disk carried by said spring and adapted to rest upon the head, as set forth.
