Description

To all whom it indy concern ltnted .583mm @sind @twine JOSEPH F. APDLEGATE AND GASPAR Ill-EIOGK,OF NEW ALBANY, INDIANA.
Letters Patent No. 101,078, dated March 22, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT `IIN BUN GS.
The Schedule referred to :in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
Be it known that we, JOSEPH F'. APPLEGATE and GASPAR FEIOGK, of New Albany, in the county oi' Floyd, and in the State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bungs; and do .hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and
`air and steam-tight, and thereby prevent the liquid contained in`` the ,barrel from evaporating or leaking out.
. In order to enable'others skilled in the art to which our invention appertains to make and use the same, we will now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring t0 the annexed drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a bottom or inside view of our bung;y
Figure 2 is aside View; and' Figure 3 isr a verticall section of the saine.
Figure 4 is a side view of a. modification thereof, involving, however-the same principle.
A represents the bung-stave of a barrel, having the usual round hole for the insert-ion of the bung. rIlhis hole is countersunk the thickness of the cap, forming a packing-seat. l
B is the top or cap, provided lwith a stein, C, having an offset, a, as shown in tig. 3.
Beyond the oti'set ct there is a small blank, b, on the stem, and then a screw, d, the balance of the stem. Orpart of the inner end may be blank, with a small nut, e, at the inner end.
The top or cap B is provided with packing t' to fit in the countersunk bung-holes, and on the outside it has two or more wrench-holes f f, as shown in iig. 3.
The hull or body D of the bung has an opening in the center for the' passage ofthe stem G, and has a female screw at the inner end of the center opening; also two side openings.
At the side and outer end of the hull or body D, to prevent the same iiom'tu1'ning,.we place two or more catches k 7.1, as shownifin-flg. 1.
In the hull or body D are two or more levers E E,
worked by the offset a of the stem C, pressing against them when the stem is screwed'down into the center opening. Said levers arc pivoted by rivet-s or screws to the hull.
Ifthe nut c is removed from the inner end of the stem C', the cap or top B with the stein can be taken out and removed at pleasure, the lhull or body D remaining stationary in the bung-hole, by properly fitting the sameltherein.
A simpler i'orm of above bung is represented in fig. 4. It consists of a cap or top, B', with oiset a', packing-seat and packing fi', wrench-holes and countersink in bungstave of barrel, the same asin the above-described bung,
` with a screw-stein, C', and a sliding top, G, at the inside of bung-hole, fastenedrby an oblong joint, H, at the side of bung-hole, by a screw, I, through the bungstave, said screw being packed, and the sliding top G is provided with a catch, h, for moving the same.
The cap or top B isy driven in the countersink in the bung-stave by driving-the screw of the stem C l into the inside top G.
Both bungs, when properly drivenl in the bunghole, become perfect-ly steam andnir-tight.
By the use of these bu'ngs, the bung-stave of the barrel will be saved, and last as long as Vany of the others.
Ihe bungs may be made of any kind of metal capable of withstanding the pressure from the liquid.
Having thusy fully described our invention,
What we claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. The hull r body D, constructed as described, and provided with catches k It and levers E E, substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
2. 'lhc combination ofthe cap or top B with screwstem 0,'0f`sct a, hull or b'ody D, and levers E E, all constructed and arranged to operate substantially in the manner' and for the purposes herein set forth.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing, we have liereunto sct our hands this 21st day ot' January, 187
