To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHANNES BUCK- STINAT, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of the city of To ronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outlets and Strainers for Washbasins; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.

The invention relates to improvements in outlets and strainers for wash basins, as described in the following specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.

The invention consists essentially in the novel construction of the outlet ferrule whereby overflow orifices are formed in the side walls and the portions cut from said orifices are bent inwardly to form a strainer.

The objects of the invention are, to obviate the unsanitary features in the use of cast metal outlets, and to devise a device which presents smooth surfaces to which dirt will not readily adhere and in which the strainer portion cannot be accidentally broken.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of the basin showing my device attached thereto. Fig. 2 is an enlarged perspective detail of the device shown partly broken away.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

Referring to the drawings, 1 is the outlet ferrule formed of a length of tubing having one end thereof swaged outwardly forming the flange 2.

3 are a plurality of orifices cut in the side walls of the ferrule 1 a short distance below the flange 2.

In cutting the orifices 3 the portions of metal cut out of the orifices are left attached at the bottom of the said orifices and are bent inwardly forming the fingers 4c, the inner ends of said fingers meeting at the center and forming a strainer to prevent articles dropped in the basin from falling Specification of Letters Patent.

into the outlet pipe. The lower end of the ferrule 1 is threaded on its exterior and is secured in the basin 5 by a suitable nut 6. The overflow orifices register with the overflow passage 7 formed in said basin, the flange 2 fitting snugly into the recess 8.

This device is preferably formed of a length of brass tubing and the surface thereof is therefore very smooth and dirt or any foreign matter will not readily adhere to the sides as it does in the ordinary cast metal devices which present very rough surfaces. Further, the strainer members which form an integral part of the device are also very smooth and being of drawn metal cannot be readily broken.

Another important feature of this device is that in the event of a small article falling through the orifices between the strainers it can be recovered very readily by bending the fingers l either downwardly or upwardly and this can be accomplished without damage to the device as the metal will bend without fracture.

What I claim as my invention is:

1. A basin outlet and strainer having lateral overflow openings through a straight walled tubular body and a plurality of fingers partially punched from said body wall and bent downwardly to the center, thereby providing both a strainer and the lateral overflow openings.

2. In an outlet and strainer for wash basins, a tubular member havinga flanged upper end and its outer wall threaded at the lower end and openings cut in the side wall thereof intermediate of the length forming the overflow passages, and fingers formed by the cutting of said orifices bent inwardly and having their ends meeting in the center of said tubular member.
