Description

R. L. GLATHART. HINGE HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED JUNE 10. 1911.
Patented Nov. 21, 1911..
NVE/v TOR.
BY fu/WM- UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.-
ROLLAND L. GLATHART, OF MANNINGTON, WEST VIRGINIA.
HINGE-HOLDER.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ROLLAND L. GLATH' ART, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Mannington, in the county of Marion and State of West Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinge-Holders, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to hinge holders. and the objects of my invention are to provide means in a manner as hereinafter` set forth for detachably holding a hinge in position, more particularly hinges that are used in connection with screen doors or other doors that are often removed from the door-frame, and to provide a hinge holder that is simple in construction, durable, easy to install and inexpensive to manufacture.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specically described and then claimed.
Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a screen door provided with the hinge holder, Fig. 2 is an enlarged vertical sectional view of the hinge holder, Fig. 3 is an enlarged front elevation of the hinge, Fig. 4 is a rear ele vation of the strap of the frame member, and Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the inner plate of the frame member.
The frame member comprises a metallic plate 1 adapted to be countersunk or mounted in a recess 2 provided therefor in a door-frame 3. The plate 1 has openn ings 4 and adapted to register with these openings are the openings 5 of a strap 6, the openings 4 and 5 receiving screws 7 employed for retaining the plate 1` and the strap 6 in engagement with the door-frame 3. The strap 6 provides a tapering socket 8 and said strap is provided with a central opening 9 havin the walls thereof screw threaded to receive a set screw 10. The plate 1 is provided with a central longitudinal shallow groove 4a for a purpose that will presently appear.
The door member of the hinge comprises a leaf 11 adapted to be secured by screws Specication of Letters Patent.

or other fastening means 12 to the edge of the door 13. The plate 11 has apertured lugs 14 and pivotally mounted between these lugs by a pin 15 is a barrel 16 of a tapering leaf 17. The leaf 17 is adapted to enter t-he socket 8 and be held by the set screws 10.
The tapering leaf 17 has the rear face thereof provided with a central longitudinal shallow rib 17a and this rib is adapted to enter the groove 4a of the plate 1. The strap 6 is offset sufficiently whereby a slot between said strap and the platel will be of. a width corresponding to the thickness of the leaf 17 and the rib 17a. After the leaf 17 is positioned between the strap 6 and the plate 1, with the rib 17a in the groove. 4a, the set screws 10 can be tightened to lock the leaf against the plate 1. The rib 17a assists in retaining the leaf in position, preventing the leaf from becoming accidentally displaced orsagging between the strap 6 and the plate 1. The rib also obviates the necessity of tightening the screw 10 to that extent, that a wrench would have to be used to turn the same.
Encircling the pin 15 between the lugs 14 and the barrel of the leaf 17 is a coiled spring 18 having the ends 19 thereof engaging the plate 11 and the leaf 17, this spring being of the ordinary and well known type designed to maintain the door 13 normally in a closed position.
The device consists of comparatively few parts and can be made of any size orof any durable material.
A hinge holder comprising a plate having a longitudinal groove formed therein, a strap secured to said plate having a tapering socket for the recept-ion of a tapered ribbed leaf with the rib of a leaf extending in said groove and a set screw carried by the strap for retaining the ribbed leaf in engagement with said grooved plate.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ROLLAND L. GLATHART.
