Description

u initiiert toiles T. A. MACAULAY, OF NORTHAMPTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 100,909, dated March 15, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN NEEDLE-ADJUSTING- BLOCK FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters .Patentl and making part of the `same.
To all whom t may concern Be it knownA that I, T. A. MACAULAY, of the town of Northampton, county of Hampshire, and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented a new and improved Adjustable Needle-Block for Sewing-Machines; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming part of this specitieation. A
The nature of my invention relates to an improved manner of adjusting the needle in a sewing-machine, so as to bring -it toward or from the shuttle or hook, as the case may require; and j,
It consists in constructing on the needle-block, at
vright angles to the line of the needle-hole, a stem,
through which a set-screw is passed for confining the needle, the stem passing through a hole near thelower end of the needle-bar, which latter is reduced and slotted, and across which slot a clamping-screw passes, the block being steadied by a piu projecting from the needle-bar and tting in a groove in its top.
Fignre 1 is a vertical side view, showing the needlebar h, the head ofthe clampinU-screw f, the set-screw b for securing the'needie, the needle-block a, and stem a', passing-through the hole in the needle-bar, the needle c, and steading-pin e.
Figure 2 is a vertical face view of fig. 1, showing the slot v1 and clamping-screw f, stcadying-pin c, and nec- -dle-bar h.
Figure 3 is a view of gs. 1 and 2 from above.
Similar letters in these figures refer to like parts.
The stem a of the needle-block a is inserted into the hole in the needle-bar h, which it lits accurately; is maintained in a vertical position by the steadyingpin e resting in a groove at the top in the needle-block, and firmly seemed in any required posit-ion by the clamping-screw fat the lower end of the needle-har.
g is a guide-hole for the passage of the thread to the needle, and
d,a set-screw, for making a tine adjustment of the block. v
Figures 4 and 5 show a modification, in which the 'steadying-pin and set-screw are combined in one, and
represented by the letter a'.
Having thus fully described my invention,
Vhat I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The needle-bar having the hole, slot, steadying-pin, and clamping-screw, iii combination with the block provided with the stem and groove, as and for the purpose set forth.
