To all whom it may concern:

Be it known. that I, AMASA C. KASSON, of Milwankee, in the county of Milwaukee, and State of isconsin, have invented certain Improvementsin Binders for Sewing-Machines, of which the followingis a specification, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings.

My inventiolfrelates to binders for sewing-machines, and consists in constructing a binder of one piece of metal, and in such form as to hold in position the binding and turn it evenly over and under the edge of the fabric upon which it is to be sewed, and so that it may be easily and readily attached to and removed from the foot-presscr of sewing-machines.

Figure 3 is an end view of the binder, showing how the cloth and binding are fed through it.

I construct my binder B in one piece, out of any suitable metal, and of any size desired, giving itthe form and shape, or nearly so, as shown in figs. 1, 2, and 3, in which it will be seen that it is provided with a socket, a, of the proper size to fit upon the footpresser of a sewing-machine, as shown in fig. 1; also with a fluke. or guide U, as shown in fig. 2, to extend along the side of the ibot-presser, as shown in fig. 1, and serve as a guide to the fabiics as they are fed through the binder and also with atongue, d, shaped and arranged as shown in figs. 1, 3, and 3, to receive and hold in place the lower edge of the binding, and in connection with the interior curved surface of the binder, to the right of the socket a, and the outer right surface of said socket, against which the upper portion and edge of the binding rests, and is held in place to give-the required and proper curve and direction to the binding.

The binder, thus constructed, I connect by means of its socket to the foot-presser of a sewing-machine.

\Vhile the foot-presser shown in the drawings, fig. 1, is the same. as now used upon the Singer family sewingmachine, I do not propose to confine myself thereto, nor to anyparticula'rsize or shape of foot-pressers to sewingmachines, as my binder can be readily adapted to the ibot-pressers of any machines now known or'used.

' the raw edge of the fabric to be bound, which has been inserted over the outer surface of the tongue, and. so as to lay between the edges of the binding, as shown in fig. 3, and after having thus arranged the fabric and the binding, the whole is then fed along toward the needle, guided and kept close within the binder, regularly and evenly, and without undue friction.

By this construction of binder it will be seen that it may be connected to or removed from the footpresser of a sewing-machine readily and quickly, and when so connected the under sides of both will be in the same -plane.

It is obvious that binders of the kind above described, may be constructed of diiferent sizes, as required to fit different sizes and shapes of foot-pressers to sewin g-machines, as well as to be adapted to the different kinds of cloth, or. other fabric to which the binding is to be attached, so that different sizes may be used at pleasure on the same machine, and also so that when removed the machine .may be used for all ordinary purposes.

Having thus described my invention,

What I claim is- 1. The binder B, cons'tructed substantially as herein described, for attachment to the foot-presser of a sewing-machine in the manner herein set forth.

2. The combination of the binder B, with a footpresser of a sewing-machine, so constructed that the former may be connected to and detached from the latter, by simply sliding off or on the end of the latter, as set forth. AMASA O. KASSON.
