To all whom it may concern:
Be it lmown that I, ALBERT E. HART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Owatonna, in the county of Steele, State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Welding-Clamps; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to welding clamps and more particularly to that class adapted to be applied to an anvil to clamp the share and the land side of a plow in proper relative position while being welded and the primary object of my invention is to provide means for securely holding these parts of the plow against movement during the process of welding.
Broadly stated the invention comprises a share supporting block which has its upper surface curved to conform to the contour of the share, and a block which is adjustably connected with the share supporting block and it is designed to clamp a land side between it and the said share supporting block with one of the edges of the land side in engagement throughout its length with the corresponding edge of the plow share. The clamping member is arranged for vertical sliding movement through the land side clamping block andit is designed, when depressed by means of a foot lever, to securely 1c)lamp the plow share upon its supporting locl In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of my invention, Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, Fig. 3 is a top plan view, Fig. 4 is a detail vertical transverse sectional view therethrough taken in a line with one of the set screws for adjusting the land side clamping block with respect to the share supporting block.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the numeral 10 denotes the plow share supporting block of my invention and this block has its upper face curved to conform to the contour of the plow share and is provided on its under side with a depending squared stud 11 which is to be inserted in the usual rectangular opening found in anvils being shown in the drawings and inclicated by the numeral 12.
The under face of this block 10 is recessed at its rear portion as shown at 13 to receive the base portion 14 of a land side clamping block 15 which extends vertically upward from the extreme rear edge portion of the base 14. This base is provided adjacent each of its ends with a slot 16 and a threaded bolt 17 with a squared head passed upwardly through each of these slots and engages with the threads of the tapped bores 18 formed in the lower face of the recessed portion of the block 10. By this means it is possible to adjust the blocks 12 and 15 toward and away from each other to adapt them for use in clamping a land side between their opposing faces.
Reciprocally mounted through the block 15 and extending above and below the same is a rod 19 which is provided at its upper end with a clamping head 20 the under face of which is inclined as at 21. Secured to the rear of the block 15 is an arm 22 the lower end of which extends downwardly in parallel spaced relation to the rod 19 and terminates in a lateral extension 24 the purpose of which will be hereinafter explained. Carried by this arm 22 intermediate its length is a ring 25 which surrounds the rod 19 and forms a guide therefor, and surrounding the rod 19 is a helical spring 26 the lower end of which rests upon the ring 25 while its upper end bears against a pin 27 which extends laterally from the rod 19, the function of this spring being to maintain the head 20 in raised position as shown in the drawings.
Pivoted to the laterally turned portion 24 of the arm 22 is a lever with which is pivotally connected as at 29 the lower end of the rod 19 it being understood that the laterally turned portion 24 serves to properly position the pivot point of the lever with respect to the point of connection therewith of the rod. A foot piece 30 is provided upon the end of the lever 28 opposite to its pivot and whereby the lever may be depressed to lower the rod 19 and bring its head 20 into engagement with the upper face of a plow share upon the block 10 thereby securely holding the plow share thereto during the process.
In operation the land side of the plow is positioned between the blocks 10 and 15 and secured in place by adjusting said blocks as previously described. The share is then positioned upon the upper face of the block 10, which as described is curved to conform to the curvature of the share, the lower edge of the share resting upon the edge of the land side. Pressure is then applied to the foot piece 30 by which means the head 21 is drawn down and held upon the upper face of the plow share, thus firmly holding the share and land side in position to be welded.
What is claimed is 1. A device of the class described com prising a share supporting block, a clamping block adjustably connected with the share supporting block and adapted to clamp a land side therebetween and the said block, a rod arranged for vertical movement through the clamping block and having a head extending above the share supporting block and means for normally holding the rod in raised position, means whereby the rod may be lowered into clamping engagement with the upper face of the share supporting block.
2. A device of the class described comprising a share supporting block, a clamping block adjustably connected with the share supporting block, said share supporting block having its upper face inclined and curved to conform to the contour of the share, a rod slidably engaged through the clamping block and provided with a head having an inclined under face to conform to the inclination of the upper face of the share supporting block, and means for moving said rod to bring its head into and out of engagement with the upper face of said share supporting block.
