POCKET-HANGER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 24, 1911.
Application filed December 10, 1909. Serial No. 532,331.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, LINWOOD P. W'RIGHT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Brockton, county of Plymouth, Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pocket-Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to car straps or hangers and particularly to a strap adapted to be carried in the pocket or bag for inclividual use in public conveyances.
The present congested condition of metropolitan life has brought about such crowded conditions of public traveling as to necessitate the carrying of large numbers of unseated passengers. The usual straps or hangers provided for the support and steadying of those thus compelled to stand soon become not only soiled and untidy but, as has been shown by bacteriological tests, to commonly carry the germs of many infectious diseases incident upon the use of public straps or hangers.
In addition to the novel idea of an individual removable pocket hanger as such, this invention further provides means for the solution of various other difliculties incident to the use of such an article. The variation in stature among the traveling public is, of course, great and it is well known that many who are compelled to stand are not even able to reach the straps provided for that purpose. A further difficulty is, of course, present in any removable strap which might be carried by the individual and this lies in the manner of attachment and detachment to the strap rail. This rail is usually set so high as to be above the reach of even a tall man and this invention has, therefore, also to deal with the problem of providing for the engagement of the strap with the strap rail thus elevated.
These, with various other features of form, structure, arrangement and use, will be more fully developed and described in the specification which follows.
In this specification and in the drawing which forms a part thereof I have employed as illustrative of my invention an embodiment well adapted to the ends in view and which will make clear the general principles of my invention. This embodiment is described in the specification and shown in the drawing, reference to the various parts being made through a medium of corresponding reference numerals similarly used throughout.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a view of my removable strap hanger in unfolded condition, Fig. 2 is a view showing the removable strap hanger folded for carrying, and Fig. 3 is a transverse section of the strap showing the reinforcing rim.
1 is a strip of any suitable material, such as a fabric, in which is formed a rib 2 of any suitable means, as by weaving in a heavier cord, as indicated at 2.
3 is a flattened rail hook slotted at its lower end for the reception of the strip 1 and 4 is a buckle for the adjustment of the strap loop to a proper height.
When the strap is in the position shown in Fig. 1 by grasping the doubled strap suflicient rigidity will be found on account of the rib 2 to support vertically the hook 3. This is on account of the lightness of the hook 3 and the tight clamping of the flattened shank of the hook 3 in the fold of the strap 1. It is possible, therefore, for even a short person by taking hold of the strap 1 well down to reach up and engage the hook 3 with a strap rail. When thus engaged the strap may be used as a hanger or any support in the usual manner. To disengage the hanger the strap 1 is raised longitudinally, thus disengaging the hook 3. The strap may then be given a double fold and the central portion thrust within the hook 3, as shown in Fig. 2, making of the hanger a compact bundle or roll. By means of the buckle 4: the length of the strap 1 and the loop which is formed thereby may be adjusted so that it will be of proper length for persons of any height.
Various modifications may, of course, be made in the materials and in the form and able but longitudinally stiffened strap loop,
A pocket strap hanger comprising a fold- .said folded strap will yieldingly fit said 10 hook.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
