To all whom it 'may concern Be itknown that-I, WALTER Snaw, of thetown of Newfane, inthe county of Niagara, .and State of New York, have invented a new vand useful Fruit-Box; and I do hereby declare that the following is afull and exact description thereof', reference being had to the Vaccompanying drawings and the letters of refer-v ence marked thereon.

My box is `constructed as follows: `One piece is bent so as to form the sides a a a a., fig.' 1, of the required rectangular box, the ends overlap each other, and are secured together by tacks b Ab b, or otherwise, A l

One piece, D, fig. 2, similar in form and nearly equal in size to one of the sides of the box, basa thin narrow strip, c, of the same or other suitable material,

secured across it by tacks or otherwise, in a line parallel to and equidistant from its upper and lower edge. Or the piece D and strip c maybe formed in one sin-- gle piece, of the same material.

This piece D, with the strip c facing the side of the box with which it corresponds, is then secured thereto on the inside .bytacks 11 b' b' b', fig. 1, or other fastenings, which will securely hold this lining to theside of the box; u

Another piece, similar to the one just described, is `secured tothe opposite side of the box inthe same manner.

If this strip be omitted, the lining may be tacked directly to the sides of the box, in which case `the upper and lower edges of the lining must besprung in, to receive the ends "of the cover and bottom, or it maybe fixed at a. suitable distance from the side, so as to leave a space of `proper width for the reception of the cover, and may be secured vby .tacks inserted through the ends of the box, so as to project into'its ends, or its ends may be folded, so as to cut into the ends of the box inside, and there be secured. 4 y

One piece, C, iig. 3, of suitable size, forms the cover. Itis leent at f f at right angles -to its surface. Sectionsd d are then. pushed down between the sides of the box a a and the linings dd, in the space'e, iig. 4, till the cover rests on the upper edges of ysaid linings, and is there retained by pressure of adjoining parts.

Another piece in all respects similar to this, and used in the'same manner, forms the bottom. y

The box, when thus constructed, may be packed from either side, and can then b e readily opened on the opposite side. i

The piece intended for the 'bottom may4 if desired, be more securely fastened after the box is packed, by `tacks g g, or by tins h, secured tothe sides of the box, and bent over the bottom piece,-g. 1.

The uses of the fixed lining are to support the cover and bottom, and, in combination with the sides ofthe box, to retain them iirmly in place; to facilitate packing and prevent injury to thefruit in placing and re- Imoving the cover; to allow a circulation lof air, by

retaining the vcover in a slightly elevated position; and

vto strengthen the sides of the box.

If desired, the linings D may be attached to the outer sides oi' the box. In that case the cover andl bottom would'rest upon the upper and lower edges of the sides of the box, instead of upon the edges of the linings, as described. n

What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-,- Y

A box for fruit transportation, provided with a fixed lining, so attached to the sides as to provide a recess for the reception of the cover and bottom, as described.
