Be it known that 1, JAMES CLARK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chutes, of which the following is a specification.
The chute which is the subject of the present. invention is designed to facilitate the unloading of railway freight cars, and it is the aim of the invention to provide an improved support for a chute of this kind by which it can be readily applied to either side or end of the car, and also adjusted to different heights and inclinations.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in a novel construction and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which drawing Figure l is a vertical section showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the supporting bracket of the chute removed.
Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes a fragment of a railway freight car on one of the side walls 6 of which the chute 7 is mounted so as to discharge into a wagon or other receptacle, a wagon box 8 being shown. The chute is constructed of wood or any other suitable material, and is in the form of a trough, having a bottom and side walls. The discharge end of the chute is provided with a gate 9 which is hinged at the top to a beam 10 extending across the top of the side walls. To the bottom of the chute is pivoted, as indicated at 11, a rod 1.2 having a hook 13 at one end which is adapted to engage the free end of the gate when it is in closed position, to lock said gate in this position. The other end of the rod has a suitable handle 14. The chute is supported in operative position on the side wall 6 of the car'by the following devices: On the bottom of the chute are two depending stems 15 provided each with a series of apertures 16. These stems are formed by bending downwardly the ends of a bar 17 secured in any suitable manner to the bottom of the chute. On the side wall 6 of the car is mounted a bracket with which the stems 15 are engageable. This bracket has a base portion 18 provided at its upper end with a hook 19 which is placed Specification of Letters Patent.

over the top of the wall 6, the base portion fitting on the outside of said wall as shown in Fig. 1. At the top of the base portion are oppositely extending horizontal arms 20 and 21, respectively, which are provided with longitudinally extending slots 22, and the extremity of the arm 21 is connected to the lower end of the base portion 18 by a brace '23. The slots 22 are designed to receive the stems 15, pins 24 being inserted through selected ones of the apertures 16 above and below the arms 20 and 21, whereby the chute is securely held in place on the bracket. By providing two stems l5, and the series of apertures 16, the height of the chute, as well as the inclination thereof, may be varied as desired by properly locating the pins in the apertures. The bracket is not permanently attached to the car, but can be readily removed therefrom when not in use. The drawing shows it mounted on one of the side walls of the car, but it will be understood that it can be mounted on the other side wall, or on either one of the end walls with equal facility. Two brackets as herein described will be employed, and the chute has two sets of stems 15, so that it is securely held against lateral displacement.
hen in operative position, the discharge end of the chute is located above the wagon box 8, so that the material which is shoveled into the chute is carried down the same into the wagon box. The gate is held open by gravity and serves to deflect the material into the wagon box and to prevent it from being carried beyond the same. The chute is also intended to be employed as follows: It will be adjusted on the bracket so as to extend horizontally, in which position it will be held by properly locating the pins in the apertures of the stems 15. The gate 9 will be closed and held in this position b the hook 18. The material is now shovele into the chute and when it is full, the top pin 24 of the stem which is nearest the rear or discharge end of the chute is removed, and the gate is unlocked, whereupon the chute tilts downwardly and the load is automatically dumped into the Wagon box, the bracket arm 20 and the pins 24 engaging the same serving as the pivotal support of the chute. It will be noted that the pivot is located off the center of the chute, and toward the front end thereof, so that the chute is unbalanced when it is released, as stated, and the tilting movement is automatic.
I claim:
1. The combination of a chute having depending stems, a supporting bracket having an attaching hook at its upper end engageable over the support, and said upper end of the bracket being provided with longitudinally slotted horizontal arms through the slots of which arms the aforesaid stems pass, and means for adjustably fastening the stems in the slots.
2. The combination of a chute having depending apertured stems, a supporting bracket, said bracket having slotted horizontal arms through the slots of which arms the aforesaid stems pass, and fastening means passing through the apertures of the stems above and below the bracket arms.
3. The combination of a chute having depending stems, a supporting bracket, said bracket having slotted horizontal arms,
through which the aforesaid stems pass, and fastenlng means passing through the stems above and below the bracket arms, the fas- JAMES CLARK.
