HEATING APPARATUS.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY LA VERNE COLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Rockford, in t-he county of finnebago and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Heating Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invention is to increase the eiciency of a steam heating apparatus without increase of fuel consumption, and consists in creat-ing a suction on the steam and water flowing from the radiator the-reby allowing the live steam to flow more freely through the radiator.
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a section of a steam generator and an elevation of a radiator, and the pipe connections therewith. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the supplemental steam generator.
The heating apparatus in the main is of an old construction, comprising the main steam generator l, radiator 2, pipe 3 leading from the main steam generator to the radiator, and the return pipe 4L leading from the radiator to the lower portion of the main steam generator. The steam generated from the water in the main generator passes by way of the pipe 3 to the radiator, and the condensed steam returns by pipe 4 to the main steam generator. This is the usual arrangementof a steam heating plant.
My improvements consist in the employment of a supplemental steam generator in the form of a coil or loop 6 placed within t-he combustion chamber of the main steam generator, one branch 7 of which connects with the radiator 2 and contains a check valve 8. The other branch 9 of the supplemental steam generator contains a check valve 10 and this branch in this instance connects with the steam supply pipe 3.
The function of this supplement-al steam generator is to increase circulation. This is accomplished by the condensed steam entering the supplemental steam generator 6, which on being heated will close check valve 8, pass check valve l0 and enter the steam supply pipe 3 and mingle with the live steam and pass to the radiator. A constant circulation of steam and water is had through this supplemental steam generator.
In some steam heating systems as heretofore constructed, it is difficult to cause the circulation of steam as it condenses and returns by way of the pipe 4. By my system,

the heat in the supplemental steam generator 6 will causo the steam and. water as it passes the radiator to be drawn into the supplemental steam generator, it being at intervals the point of lowest pressure, and after being heated will be forced back into the main steam generator, in this instance by way of pipe 3, and after the heated steam and water has passed the check valve 10,l
new steam and water furnished through the pipe 7 will enter the supplemental steam generator and be heated. While I have shown a coil or loop 6 placed' within the combustion chamber of the heater, it is evident that a receptacle of other form than a coil or pipe may be employed.
Briefly described the operati-on of the auxiliary or supplemental part of the system is as follows. Assuming that there is a small amount of water in the supplemental steam generator 6, it will be evident that when the same is turned or partly turned into steam, the expansive force thereof will open the check valve 10, which will permit the outflow of said steam into the pipe 3 and radiator 2. When however, the limit of this expansive force is reached, the check valve l0 will close. Vater of condensation will of course collect in the pipe 7, and there will also be pressure in said pipe. As a consequence, the combined forces will open the check valve 8, and permit the water to flow into the supplemental steam generator. This water will condense the steam contained therein to some extent, and produce a partial vacuum in the supplemental steam generator 6, causing still more water to flow past the check valve 8. This water will in turn be converted or partly converted into steam and be driven past the check valve 10. As a consequence, there will be an intermittent low from the pipe 7 into the supplemental steam generator 6, and an intermittent production of steam in said supplemental steam generator, which will pass through the pipe 9 into the pipe 3.
I claim as my invention.

A steam heating apparatus, comprising a main steam generator, a supplemental steam generator within the combustion chamber of the main steam generator, a radiator, means for supplying steam from the main steam generator to the radiator, means for intermingling the steam of the supplemental steam generator with that of the main steam generator on the supply side of the radiator, means for returning the Wat-er of condensation from the radiator to the supplemental steam generator, and a check valve situated on the intake side of the supplemental steam generator and opening in the direction of the flow of steam to said radiator;y n V n 2.
