  • My invention relates to automatic devices for regulating the amount of feed delivered to a horse or other animal, and the object of my invention is to provide a receptacle into which feed for an animal may be automatically measured and a predetermined amount delivered to the animal, together with such elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES E. DANIELS, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at 278 Hudson avenue, in the city of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Automatic Devices for Feeding Animals, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to automatic devices for regulating the amount of feed delivered to a horse or other animal, and the object of my invention is to provide a receptacle into which feed for an animal may be automatically measured and a predetermined amount delivered to the animal, together with such elements and combinations as are hereinafter more particularly set forth and claimed. I accomplish these objects by means of the mechanism illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:

WVithin a receptacle, C, which is preferably cylindrical in form, I place near one end the inwardly flaring annular plate, D, which has an opening, E, centrally disposed therein. To the end of the receptacle, C, opposite that in which the annular plate, D, is placed, I secure or form integral therewith the annular plate, F, which -has flaring sides and has an opening, f, centrally located therein which connects with a chute, G, leading to the manger or feed box, not shown. I also place in the end of the receptacle, C, opposite that in which the annular plate, D, is placed and just above the annular plate, F, an annular plate, H, extending into the receptacle, C, with its sides flaring and having a contracted opening centrally disposed therein which is adapted to be closed by the valve, J. I/Vithin the receptacle, C, above the plate, H, and preferably connected therewith I place the annular plate, K, the sides of the plate, K, being secured to the sides of the receptacle above the plate, H, whereby the sides of the plate, K, slope toward the opening con trolled by the valve, J.
The rod, L, carries the valve, J, near one end thereof, and also the valve, M, which is placed on the rod at such a distance from the valve, J, that when the rod is raised so that the valve, M,'will close the opening, E, in the annular plate, D, the contents of the receptacle between the plates, D and K, will pass out through the chute, G, to the manger or feed box, not shown. The rod, L, is mounted in the top or cover, N, of the receptacle, C, so as to reciprocate within the receptacle, 0, and also through the guide plate, U, extending across the receptacle and secured to the walls thereof. I preferably place an eye, 0, at the end of the rod for convenience in raising and lowering it.
On each side of the receptacle, C, I may arrange the chambers, P and R, or but one of them if desired. These chambers are for the purpose of shutting off a part of the receptacle, C, in order to reduce the amount of feed which will be delivered to the animal when the valve, J, is open.
The chambers, P and R, are formed by suitable walls or partitions, 5, 5, and 6, 6, extending from the walls of the receptacle, C, radially, and connected by the walls, 79 and 1", respectively, the walls, 7) and 0", being preferably concavo-convex in contour. At each end of the walls, 29 and 1", respectively, attached to the walls, 5 and 6, and extending not only throughout substantially the extent of the height of said walls, but also above the top of the walls, 7) and 7", to a point preferably adjacent to the annular plate, D, I secure the slide rods, V, V. These rods are provided with the arms, 8, 8, at each end which engage the side of the walls, 6, 6, and 5, 5, and hold the main por tion of the rod, V, spaced therefrom, making a slide way between the wall and the rod. In this slide way the sliding doors, S and T, may be moved. The doors are provided along each vertical edge, when in position, with a bended portion, 9, 9, which engages the walls, 5, 5, and 6, 6, respectively. The doors may be substantially the same in height, when in position, as are the walls, 7) and 1, so that when the doors, S and T, are lowered in the slide way, they will not extend above the walls, 79 and 1', adjacent to which they are located, respectively; but when the doors, S and T, are raised they will extend in the slide way above the top of the walls, 79 and 1", until, when desired, approximating or engaging with the annular plate, D, thereby decreasing the capacity of the receptacle, C, for
grain delivered through the opening, E. For the purpose of raising and lowering said sliding doors, S and T, I attach to each of them a rod, 8 and t, which rods extend below the doors and protrude from the receptacle, 0, near the chute, G, as shown in Fig. 1.
WVhen the door, T, is raised as shown in Fig. 1 and the valve, J, closes the opening in the plate, H, the feed delivered through the trough, U, at the top of the receptacle will pass through the opening, E, in the annular plate, D, and fill that portion of the receptacle, C, not shut off by the said door, T.
The valve rod, L, may be raised so as to permit the outflow of the feed and the Copies of this patent may-be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the Commissioner of Patents,

WVhat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
An automatic device for regulating the amount of feed delivered to animals, comprising a receptacle provided with inlet and outlet openings; a means for closing the outlet and opening the inlet or vice versa; a means in said receptacle for diminishing its interior area, comprising a chamber open at the top and bottom; a sliding door therefor; a means for opening and closing said sliding door from a point without the receptacle.
