J. I. FITZSIMMONS. FEED WATEH HEATER FOR LOBOMOIIYB AND OTHER STEAM BOILERS.

ATTORNEY exhaust steam and in erase Parana carton JOHN F. FI'IZSIMMONS, OF TACOMA, WASHINGTON.
FEED-WATER HEATER FOR LOCOMOTIVE AND OTHER STEAM-BOILERS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. Fi'rzsnr- MONS, a citizen of thevUnited States, residing at the city of Tacoma, in the county of Pierce and State of Washington, have in vented certain new and useful Improvements in Feed-Water Heaters for Loco motive and other Steam-Boilers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention pertains to devices for heating water prior to its entering a steam boiler used to generate steam for motive power.
It has for its object, first: to heat the feed water of a steamboiler to near the boiling point before entering the boiler, and make a saving of fuel required to heat the water after entering, while cold, within the boiler, and, second: to utilize the heat of the the Waste products of combustion from the furnace fire, in heating the feed water before the water enters the boiler.. I attain these objects by means of the contrivance illustrated in the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 represents a cross-section through the smoke-box of a locomotive with my invention located therein at the front end of the boiler. Fig. 2 represents a partial vertical section and elevation of my invention, showing its construction and, Fig. 3 is a top View of my invention with onehalf of the nozzle-cap removed showing the interior arrangement.
Similar letters refer to similar parts in the several views.
In Fig. 1, A represents the smoke-box at the front end of a locomotiveboiler; B the saddle which carries the front end of the boiler and the steam cylinders C and D, the cylinders indicated being of the crosscompound type. The steam pipe 1' conducts steam from cylinder G to cylinder D, the live steam pipe fr m the boiler to the cylinder 0 and an emergency pipe to D' being indicated in broken lines back of pipe E. The nozzle F receives the exhaust steam'fro ,the cylinders through the stand pipe G lilrol directs it into the smokestack H.
To obviate'the use of the fire to heat the water to the boiling point within the boiler,
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed July 7, 1908. Serial No. 442,406.
Patented (let. 3, 1911;
and to utilize the waste heat of theexhaust steam from the cylinders, I enlarge the stand-pipe G sutliciently to admit one or more coils of water pipes to be placed therein, as indicated at l in Figs. 2 and 3. The feed water is forced through this coil and into the boiler at J. A receiving tank K is located between the check valve L and the coil I and provides a body of water for the injector to work against should the coil be come so heated at any time as to make steam. The feed water pipes to and from the coil I pass through stutting boxes at M and N in the side of the stand-pipe. These prevent any steam escaping into the smokebox. \Vith this arrangement of one or more coils of feed water pipes within the nozzle stand-pipe G, as described, I obtain the objects of my invention. The exhaust steam in passing through the stand-pipe G comes in direct contact with the coils I, and the cold feed water in its circuit therethrough is heated to or near the boiling temperature before entering the boiler at J. In addition to the steam heat, the stand-pipe stands in the midst of the smoke box where it is constantly surrounded with sparks and other waste products of combustion from the furnace fire, much of which is utilized in heating the water in the coils I and within the receiving tank K. The water thus heated, prior to entering the boiler, will make a great saving of fuel and insure a more constant and uniform head of steam on the boiler.
I do not limit myself in the use of my invention to locomotives only, but reserve the claim and right to apply it; in various forms and proportions to a fee(lwater heater attachment.- of any boiler or boilers where the heat of the exhaust steam, or the heat of waste products of combustion may be used in heating the feed-water.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
A feed water heater for boilers, comprising an exhaust steam stand-pipe located in the boiler smoke-box, a water circulating coil located in the stand-pipe to be exposed to the direct action of exhaust steam in the should steam be generated in the coils 10- cated within the stand-pipe, substantially l as described. I 10 In testimony whereof I afiiir my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOHN F. FITZSIMMONS.
