To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS LUND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Beverly, in the county of Essex and Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented cer tain Improvements in Devices for Cutting and Ornamenting Sheet Material, of which the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a specification, like reference characters on the draw ings indicating like parts in the several figures.
This invention relates to dies which are used for cutting or dying out a number of similar pieces from thin sheet material such as upper leather for boots or shoes and contemplates the provision of means whereby such a die may be efficiently used for marking, ornamenting, pinking, or performing other secondary operations upon the same.
More particularly the invention relates to the class of dies used with cutting or clicking presses to cut or die out various parts of the uppers of boots or shoes.
It is an object of the present invention to provide for a machine of the class indicated a member, which besides performing the function of the ordinary die, shall, when desired, perform another or secondary operation on the portion of the stock cut or died out. An important advantage of such an arrangement is that by its use several operations heretofore separately performed, may take place simultaneously, resulting in great economy of time and more uniformity in the product and from such uniformity in the in dividual pieces, greater accuracy in assembling the shoe is secured.
Another object of the invention is to provide a die element having a cooperating 0r supplementary member for performing one or more of the secondary operations above indicated, the general arrangement and construction of which shall permit the die to be used with any one of an assortment of supplementary members according to the operation it is desired to perform upon the stock.
A further object of the invention is to provide an assortment of members of varied ornamental design for perforating, embossing, marking, pinking, scalloping, or in general, for impressing the stock with any Specification of Letters Patent.

desired design, these members each being adapted to cooperate With the primary die element and being interchangeable.
The invention contemplates a construc tion of die and supplementary member such that the latter may be readily connected with and disconnected from the die. Further, the design of the supplemental member is such that no radical changes in the construction of the commercial form of die are necessary whereby any existing dies may be easily modified for use with an assortment of supplementary members. It is advantageous to so arrange and connect the die and supplementary member that no additional strain is imposed on the die, but the cutting pressure of the machine is transmitted to each of the elements independently. Accordingly, a novel feature of the invention lies in the design and construction of the means for connecting the supplementary member with the die, one convenient form of which comprises interlocking tongues and slots formed on the respective members, and so located that the upper edges and cutting edges of the two elements shall lie in the same planes respectively. The connecting means are further designed to permit adjustment of the supplementary member with respect to its cooperating die but are of such construction as to insure that the two elements, when once adjusted, shall be maintained rigidly in their predetermined relation in order that each piece of stock operated upon may be of uniform appearance. While the supplementary members are, as a general thing, adapted for use in connection with a die they may, if desired be used independently thereof for ornamentmg or marking a piece of stock previously cut out, though as before stated the simultaneous performance of the various operations of cutting and ornamenting has great advantages and is the primary object of the invention. The invention, however, contemplates the provision of an assortment of members of varied useful or ornamental designs which shall be capable of independent use for performing the above indicated operations.
A further feature of the invention relates to the construction of the individual supplementary members and lies in the provision for disposing of the cuttings or punchings which result from the use of the memher, the object being to keep such waste pieces from falling on and obscuring the stock being operated upon.
For purposes of illustration my invention will be described and shown as embodied in a die for cutting toe tip blanks in connection with a supplementary member for perforating or for perforating and pinking the blank.
In the accompanying drawings, Figurel is a perspective View of a toe tip die and a supplementary tip perforating member; Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of a similar die for cutting and pinking atoe tip blank showing a tip perforating member connected with the die. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of a modified toe tip die and a supplementary member showing the pinking blade on the latter member.
Reference character 2. designates a die, suitable for use in a clicking press, for cutting or dying out toe tip blanks. The die comprises a closed metal form of one or more pieces of bar steel or other suitable metal bent to the required shape and welded together. The sides of the die are beveled toward the lower edge and ground to a cutting edge, and the upper edge is ground to lie in a single plane whereby the working pressure may be uniformly applied over the entire die.
The supplementary member shown in Fig. 1 is for perforating the toe tip blank on a line parallel to its rear or straighter edge and comprises a plate 7 in which are mounted a plurality of small punches 10 for making the perforations and to the plate 7 is secured in any convenient manner the plate 3. The plate 3 is drilled in alinement with each of the punches 10 so that the punchings cut out by the same may pass up through the plate into the trough 5 which extends across the upper surface of the plate. I The upper plate 3 has formed thereon projecting hook shaped lugs or tongues 6 which are adapted to extend through slots t in the top edge of the die and engage with the outer face thereof below the slots. In the vertical portionof these lugs I have provided set screws 16 by which the rear face of the supplementary member may be brought into close contact with the inside of the die and the two members thereby locked in engagement. It is, in some cases, desirable to vary the distance between the line of perforations and the rear edge of the tip blank since one style of shoe may require a double seam on the edge of the toe tip while another may require a single seam. Accordingly, for adjusting the location of the perforating member with respect to the rear blade of the die, adjustable stops such as screws 17 are provided upon the supplementary member and the throat of the hook shaped lugs is made wider than the thickness of the die. It will be apparent that by allowing the stops 17 to project beyond the surface of the supplementary member, the rear surface thereof is held away from the die blade and the distance between the edge of the blank and the line of perforations is correspondingly increased. The two elements are held rigidly in such position by turning home the set screws 16.
The supplementary member may readily be attached to the die simply by passing the lugs 6 through the slots 4: and pressing down on the upper surface of the member till the lugs lie flush with the upper edge of the die, whereupon the stops 17 are brought up against the rear die blade by the set screws 16. The operation of detaching and separating the two elements is accomplished with equal facility as will be obvious.
In Fig. 2 I have illustrated a device for dying out a toe tip blank and at the same time perforating and pinking the rear edge thereof. In this construction the rear blade of of the die takes the form of a pinking knife 14: while the supplementary perforating member is of similar construction to that described in connection with Fig. '1. If it is desired to die out a toe tip blank, pinked on its rear edge but not perforated, the die alone is used, while additional ornamentation comprising a line of perforations is obtained by connecting the die and supplementary member as indicated, when one impression of the clicking press will cause all the operations to be simultaneously performed.
Fig. 3 illustrates a modification in which the pinking blade is mounted on the supplementary member together with the tip perforating punches. In this construction the rear blade of the die is cut away at 12 and a pinking knife 13 of a shape corresponding to the cut away portion of the die is mounted upon the supplemental member by any convenient means such as the screws 15. Such construction provides a convenient means for varying the ornamental design to be impressed on the blank in that different shapes of pinking blade and various sizes of tip perforating punches may be combined with the die. In connecting the supplementary member and die illustrated in Fig. 8 the pinking blade 13 is detached from the supplemental member and the latter is then brought into engagement with the die by means of the lugs 6 and slots 4. The pinking blade is then placed in the cut away portion of the rear blade of the die and made fast to the supplementary member as indicated.
It is to be understood that instead of punches for tip perforating, any desired shape of cutting or marking device may be substituted upon the supplementary member, such, for example, as a plurality of small dies for making the perforations usually seen in sandals or for cutting button or eyelet holes in the quarters of the boots or shoes. It will, further, be clear from the foregoing that my invention is also adapted for use in cutting out portions of a shoe other than the toe tip, such, for example as the quarters, the vamp, foxing blanks or the like.
Having fully described my invent-ion I claim as new and desire to protect by Letters Patent 1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a die having a substantially open center with a supplementary member having a plurality of punches mounted thereon, said member being constructed and arranged to be attached to and sustained by one side of the die.
2. In a device for cutting out blanks from sheet material, the combination of a die having a substantially open center portion, with a detachable supplementary member for performing a secondary operation on a blank simultaneously with the dying out operation, said member being maintained transversely in a rigid relation to said die but having provision permitting detachment by movement in a direction parallel thereto.
3. In a device for cutting out blanks from sheet material, the combination of a die with a detachable member for performing a secondary operation on a blank simultaneously with the dying out operation, said die and said detachable member having an interlocking connection arranged to prevent relative transverse movement thereof but permitting detachment by relative movement in a direction parallel to the sides of the die.
4. In a device of the class described, the combination of a die for cutting a blank, with a detachable member for ornamenting the blank, hook-shaped connecting means on one of said elements cooperating with slots in the other element whereby the two may be readily connected and disconnected.
5. In a device of the class described, the combination of a die for cutting blanks from sheet material with a supplementary member for ornamenting the blank, lugs on said supplementary member cooperating with slots formed in said die, and means for adjusting said member transversely relative to said die.
6. In a device of the class described, the combination of a die for cutting a blank, with a supplementary member for ornamenting the blank, adapted to beheld within the periphery of the die, adjusting means therefor and means for maintaining said supplementary member in adjusted relation with the die during the cutting operation.
7. In a device of the class described, the
combination with a die having a cutting edge and a marginal pressure receiving edge, of a supplementary blank ornamenting member, intermediate members projecting from separated points on one of said elements and locking means for effecting rigid engagement of the other of said elements and each of said intermediate members.
8. A device for ornamenting sheet material comprising a plurality of cutting members, means on which the same are mounted and a trough shaped plate overlying the latter and provided with perforations corresponding to the said cutting members.
9. A device for use in a cutting press, comprising cutting members and means for supporting the same including substantially parallel projections having an intermediate open space therebetween and being adapted to receive and transmit to the c'utting members the pressure of the press.
10. In a device of the class described, th combination of a die comprising an open shallow frame having a pressure receiving edge and a parallel cuttlng edge, with a supplementary member constructed and arranged to perform secondary operations on the stock, and means for transversely varying the relative location of said die and supplementary member.
11. In a device of the class described, the combination of a die comprising an open shallow frame having a pressure receiving and a cutting edge, with an adjustable supplementary member constructed and arranged to perform secondary operations on the blank simultaneously with the cutting by the die.
12. In a device of the class described, the combination of a die comprising an open shallow frame having a pressure receiving edge and a parallel cutting edge, with a supplementary member constructed and arranged to ornament the blank cut out by the die and means to vary the location of such ornamentation on the. blank.
13. A die for cutting out toe tip blanks in combination with a supplementary member for forming a line of perforations upon the blank, said supplementary member being constructed and arranged to be attached to and sustained by one side of said die and having a recess for receiving the punchings cut from the blank.
14. In a device of the class described, the combination with a die for cutting out blanks from upper leather, of a supplementary member having a plurality of punches mounted therein, said supplementary member being located adjacent to one side of said die and being adjustably connected thereto at separated points.
15. In a device of the class described, the combination with a die for cutting blanks from sheet material, of a supplementary member having a line of punchesmounted therein, said member being located in proximity to one side of the die and having provision permitting independent adjustment of each end.
16. In a device of the class described, the combination With a die for cutting blanks from sheet material, of an elongated supplementary member carrying a line of punches and having separate engaging portions eX- name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
