UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN A. COOPER, OF JERSEY CITY, AND WILLIAM E.. VAN BUSKXRK, OF PATERSON, NEW JERSEY.
wn'rnnenen'.
Serial No. 629,757.
Application ined May 27, 1911.
i To all whom it may concern: l
Be it known that we, JOHN A. COOPER, a 'citizen of the United States, anda resident of Jersey City, in the county of Hudson and State of New Jersey, and WILLIAM R. VAN BUSKIRK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Paterson, in the county of Passaic and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Water-Gage, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to a new and im-y proved water-gage for determining the level in boilers or the like, and is especially adapted for boilers on locomotives.
An object of this invention `is to provide 'a new and improved water-gagefor boilers, which will be strong and durable, and which will not be liable totiow out, andl in which, even if it should blow out, the fragments of glass would be caught by a protector, preventing them from flying and injuring the person or eyes of the engineer.
A further object of thisinvention is to,
provide a water-gage with a protecting sleeve having one ci? its ends formed integral therewith, and with the feed-pipes projecting inwardly beyond the edge "or ends, so `as to protectthe packing between the sleeve and the glass tube.
These andfurther objects, together with the construction and combination of parts, willbe more fully described hereinafter and particularly set forth in the claim.
Rference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming. a part of this specication, in which similar characters ofhreference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in' whichi Figure 1 `is a vertical section; Fig. 2 is a side` view in elevation of the water-gage; and Fig. 3 is a horizontal section.
Referring more particularly to the separate arts of this invention as embodied in the rmshown in the drawings, 1 indicates the sheet of a boiler, lfgto which the 'water-gage 2 is attached. Usual feeders 3 and-4' are provided for the water-gage, with control valves 5 and 6.
The water-gave `includes a protecting sleeve or casing shown in the.` formof a c lnder having diametricallyfvlopposite vertically-extending slots'8, the outer side edges the tube, to allow for expansion.
' of which may be beveled at 8', and which are for the purpose of permitting light to pass through the lsleeve at these points, so that the water level can be read.
The sleeve 7 is provided at one end with a head 9, formed integral therewith, and
lat its'opposite end with a head 10, detachably connected to the body of the sleeve in any suitable manner, as by means of a' screw-threaded connection, indicated at 11.
The heads 9 and 10 have screw-threaded openings, indicated at 12 and 13', through which eXtend"feed-pipes 14 and 15. Located within the protecting sleeve 7, there is provided a `water glass tube 16, which is of suitable thickness so that it will not readily wear out or break, and made of a glass of suitable strength and durability. The tube 16 bears .at its upper and lower ends on packing rings 17 and v18, located between the ends'of the-glass tube and the heads 9 and 10.
It, is to be noted that the feed-pipes lll 4and 15 project into the glass tube 16 a considerable distance at each end, beyond the packing rings 17 and 18, so as toe protect these packing rings from direct contact withthe steam or hot water from the boiler. The packing rings project on both sides of It will thus be seen that there is` provided a simple, inexpensive water-gage, which will be strong and durable, and which will protec't the packing from direct `Contact with the water and steam.
While we have shown one embodiment of our invention, we do not wish to be limited to the specific details thereof, but desire to be protected in various changes, alterations. and modifications which may come within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described our invention, we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent z-- The combination with a cylindrical sleeve having a plurality of diametrically opposite slots, of heads at opposite ends of said sleeve, one of said heads beingl detachably connected. to said sleeve, said heads having openings therein, feed-pipes eX- tending through said openings, a glass tube extending into said sleeve, between said heads. and packing rings interposed between said glass tube and said heads, said names to this specification in the presence feed-pipes 'projecting into said glass tube a of the subscribing Witnesses.
