The front end of the knuekle i-; provided at its outer side with a spur upon which a locking; pin to is adapted to rent when the parts are unroupled. When the two draw heads are brought togethri; the hooks ll will pass .iuto the rhaniht-rs l0 and striking against the inner pltrltf tltil portions 13 of .the knuckles will swing the knuckles on their pivots in opposition to the springs it whereupon the front ends 12 of the knuekles will he swung into engagement with the lips ll of tht hooks so as to prevent the witlulrawal of the hooka and the. same motion of the knot-kins will harry them from under the l()('l (ll|{ pins-1t; so
that. the said pins will at on e drop into position in rear of the spurs-'13 and againnt the same. as? shown in hie". l. and therelrt' hold the pans in their eoup'od position. as
will he readily mulentood.
'lhe looking pin it; is provided with lugs or tilt-nets 17 adapted to hl-ar upon the up.- per side of the draw h ad and thereby prevent the pin dropping so far into the draw head as to earry it luayond its proper engagement with the knurkle or to injure the hottom of the draw head in any way. Xear the upper end of the pin is a forwardly projeothu; arm '18 the purpose of. which will presently appeatz. Upon the end of the our 11 7 vi w body or the car platform, I. journal a in lifter consisting of a rock shaft 20 havlng downturned ends or handles 21 and pro vided between its ends with lifting arms 22 and 23 which are of unequal length. The arm 22 provided with a chain z t'whieh .is attached to the locking pin 16 in the draw head immediately under the )in lifter while the opposite arm 23 isprovit ed with an offset end 25 which is'adapted to engage under the arm 18 on the locking pin in the meeting draw head. W'hen it is desired to uncouple the cars the handles 21 are swun upward and torn" ard thereby causing the litting arms 22- to swing upwardand conseopientla raising the locking pins so that the cars may be readily-pulled apart, the arm 18 riding over and out of engagement with the off-set 25 of the arm 23, as will be readily understood.
From the foregoing description,v taken in commotion with the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that I have provided acoupling' of very simple construction by which .a single operation will efleetually couple the cars and also connect the ends of the train pipe. The construction is such that, the parts will be securely held together when coupled so that accidental uncoupling of the cars or breaking of the train. pipe connection will be effectually avoided. --Tl1e locking pins 16 are preferably provided two outer recesses, said members being adapted to. engage with corresponding devices on a co-acting coupler head to hold saidhead's in rigid alinement, a gasket havingareduced inner end mounted in the intermediate recess and provided with a cen-V tral bore, a connection between said gasket and the train pipe, and a spring surrounding the inner end of said gasketand adapted to presstsaid gasket against a corresponding gasket of the other coupler to make anair tight joint therewith when the coupler heads are interlocked together.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
