To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EMiLn Bacnnns'r, of New York in the county of New York. and State of eW York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Electromagnetic Sound-Wave Therapeuticl Ap aratus; and'I hereby declare that the yollowin is a. full, clear, and exact description t ereof, reference being liadto the accompanying drawings, which foi-in part of this specification.
This invention is a novel apparatus for treating diseases of the ear, catarrli of the head, n eu'ralgia, and other ailments to `wh1ch the delicate organs of the human head are subject, and its object is to` provide an apparatus whereby the portion' of the head a ected and in particular the aural pascan be treated simultaneously by inagnetic and sound waves.
To this end the invention consists in a novel apparatus which I terni an electromagnetic aiid sound wavetherapeutic apparatus, whereby magnetic impulses or lines :of force and sound waves or vibrations may be Simultaneously generated and the intensitf of each and bot-li of these can be varie or regulated to suit the condition of the patient and produce the bestresults.

A thumb screw 4 is tapped through the plate 1", and has a disk 4 4on its inner end which may be adjusted into contact with the diaphragm, 3, and by adjusting said screw the dia bra m can be forced nearery to the coil. T iis isk 4 might be faced with rubber, as shown at 4b in Fig. 4, for the purpose of avoiding metallic contact between the diaphragm and the'disk. As a convenient means of assembling the arts the screw 3 is shown as tapped tliroug the screw 4. Fig` 1, showslthe apparatus in use for treating patients in severe cases, but in very mild cases, or in treating only one ear, one of the generators might be dispensed with. The principle under which the apparatus is operated is that a magnetic wave is ro-` duced each time the current is varie or broken and each Wave will pass through, Vthe ear and head simultaneously with ,the entry of the sound Wave produced by the vibrating dia hragm, which lat-tenis actuated by the cur ent passing through the solenoid, which current ma etizes the core which vin turn attracts-an vibrates the diaphragm atthe same speed as the vibrating current.
The thumb screw 3, is used to regulate the intensity of the magnetic fieldyby adjusting the same the core mav be moved away from the diaphragm with the result that the magnetic Waves, are very much strengthened as the pole of the core is brought-nearer to the, opening l, but the pitch or intensit of the sound waves are ldecreased; but if t ie core is moved toward the diaphragm the sound Waves will be in creased. By means of screw 4, the dia-A phragm can bemade to partially follow up the core.
The solenoidl is preferably wound withcoarse wire to prevent heating.
In cases where the sound waves are not required or desired the diaphragm 3, might be removedby unscre'wng plate l".
When thel apparatus shown in Fig. 1, is used with the generatorsin series a large number of the magnetic lines of force will be directly attracted through the head frein one magnetic generator to the other by reason of the opposite polarity of the opp-osed poles of the ma ets.
The manner in which the adjustment of the cores will var the eld between the two magnets, is thoug t to be as follows: While the adjustment of the cores toward each other will not decrease the reluctance of the magnetic circuit comprising the two cores and the two vdiaphragms, said adjustment will increase the reluctance of the local magnetic circuit, comprising one core and diahragm as the air gap between the core and iaphra m is increased. Hence the local or stra f fic d will be decreased and the main el will be increased, as obviously the strength of the field between the two magnets, or the main or useful field, will de end upon the strength or intensity ofthe ea age or stray field.
The core is preferably made of soft iron and might be permanently fixed, as indicated in Fig. 4. 'This would keep the magnetic fieldnormal, but the sound waves would be controlled by the screw 4, bringd ing the disk 4'* more' or lessl forcibly into contact with the diaphragm.
In my scientific experiments I have found that the sound waves are great-1y enhanced in value as a therapeutic agent by the assistance or coperation of a heavy magnetic wave.
Instead of makin the casing entirely of hard rubber, as indicated in Figs. 1 to 3, I might make the cylindrical shell and rear late of metal, as indicated in Fig. 4, leaving the front plate of rubber.
When two co-acting generators are used in tandem, as indicated in Fig. 1 theyare lplaced against the ears of the patient and eld in position by any convenient means,as by a connecting s ring band conventionally indicated at 6 in t e drawing and which may' be oi any desired or suitable kind and placed over orV back of the head orin any posit-ion most convenient and comfortable to the patient. When treating but one ear oneigenerator could be detached; or a single generator vattachedto a holder of any suitable kind could `be employed.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
