CORE FOR MAKING CULVERTS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 15, 1911.
Application filed December 17, 1910. Serial No. 597,810.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. KEMPF, a citizen of the United States, residing at G-oehner, in the county of Seward and State of Nebraska, have invented certain nei; and useful Improvements in Cores for Making Culverts; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the-same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in cores for use in making culverts of different sizes and the object in view is to produce a simple and efficient device of this nature which comprises forms made in pairs and about which a web is passed, the forms being expanded against the Web to hold the same taut.
The invention comprises various details of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts which will be hereinafter fully described and then specifically defined in the appended claim.
I illustrate my invention in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is a perspective view of a web adjusted for use about which a concrete culvert is adapted to be formed. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view of a pair of forms, and Fig. 4 is a sectional view showing a means for building up the web to make different sizes of culverts.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates a web, preferably of metal, and having reinforcing ribs B upon the inner face thereof and running longitudinally of the device. Adjacent to one end of the web are perforations D adapted to receive the bolts E fastened to a strip E at the other end of the web, said bolts being adapted, when the web is adjusted for use, to be passed through said perforations to hold the ends of the web together.
In order to hold the web in proper position, formers are utilized which are designated in the drawings by letters H and which are semi-circular in outline and pivoted together by means of a pivot I upon which a nut I is mounted.
The adjacent fiat faces of the former have metallic wear plates 0 fastened thereto and in one of the sections of the former adjusting screws N are mounted in threaded apertures and adapted to bear against the wear plate upon the other section of the former, forming means whereby, when the nut I is loosened or removed from the bolt upon which it is mounted and the screws turned against the wear plate upon the adjacent section, the formers may be expanded so that their curved convexed surfaces will bear frictionally against the ribs mounted upon the inner surface of the web, thus holding the web taut and in proper form to receive the weight of the concrete formed about the same.
It will be understood that my improved apparatus is adapted for making culverts of different sizes by simply utilizing formers of different sizes and by the addition of extra plates T, as shown in the drawings, thereby pulling out or lengthening the web according to the size of the culvert desired to be constructed. After the culvert has been formed and the concrete set, the formers may be loosened and the web removed from the culvert.
What I claim to be new is A form for use in making culverts, etc, comprising a web, the meeting edges of which are adapted to overlap each other and provided with series of apertures, whereby the web may be adapted for different sizes of culvert, a series of longitudinal strips fastened to the inner surface of the web, semi-cylindrical expanding sections, the adjacent faces of which are parallel and adjacent to each other, nuts countersunken -in the flat face of one of said expanding sections, screws passing through one of the fiat sections and said nuts and adapted to bear against the flat section of an adjacent member, and a bolt passing through registering apertures in the adjacent flat sections of the expanding members.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aflix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
. JOHN W. KEMPF. Witnesses:
W. H. O. WESTPHAL, H. F. GOEHNER.
