Be it known that we, SAMUEL H. KYLE and GEORGE LAENHARDT, citizens of the United States, residing at Gilman, in the county of Iroquois and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card Games, of which the following is a specilication.

This invent-ion relates to improvements in card games of the class whereby information is imparted to the players at the same time that the game is being played, and has for one of its objects to provide a simple, instructive and easily understood game which will combine instruction and amusement.

lith this and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction hereinafter described; and, then specifically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings is illustrated the preferred embodiment of the invention.

The improved game comprises fifty two cards, with or without an additional card called a joker the cards representing` the different States and Territories of the United States, and the joker representing the District of Columbia. In the drawings a representative number of the cards are shown sufficient to illustrate the playing of the game, and in this figure is shown a card bearing the name District of Columbia, a card bearing the name Alaska, a card bearing the name Hawaii, a card bearing the name Porto Rico Island, and another card bearing the name Philippine Islands and four cards representing the States and bearing the names of Illinois, New York, Virginia and California but it will be understood that each State will be represented by a card. The card bearing the name District of Columbia will also be provided with the word Joker in prominent type and matter printed thereon descriptive of the political status of the District, for instance, the words Legislated for by Congress and No vote for President. The card having the name of the Territory of Alaska thereon is also provided with a single star, and also with data representing its political status together with other information, as for instance the population. The card bearing the word Hawaii is provided with two stars and with data indicating information relative to its political status, population, etc. The card having the words Porto Rico Island thereon is provided with three stars and with similar data to the cards just named. The card bearing the words Ihilippine Islands is provided with four stars and similar information to the other special cards. The :cards indicating the States will each be provided with the words Electoral Vote together with the number of electoral votes for the several States. F or instance the card representing the State of Illinois will be provided with the figures 27 indicating the electoral vote of that State, and the remaining State cards will be provided with similar figures representing their electoral vote. Each of the State cards will also provided with a statement of the number of votes cast at the last presidential election. It will be understood that these figures will vary as the presidential elections occur. Many of the States have the same number of electoral votes, hence the cards bearing the names of such States are further designated by different reference characters such as the letters of the alphabet, or the like, the characters being arranged in progressive order according to the total vote cast. For instance the States of Arkansas, Louisiana and South Carolina each have 9 electoral votes, but the total vote of Arkansas is greater than either the vote of Louisiana or South Carolina, while the total vote of Louisiana is greater than that of the State of South Carolina, hence the card bearing the name of the State of Arkansas, which has the highest total vote, is given the additional character A, while the card bearing the name of the State of Louisiana, having the next highest total vote, is given the character B while the card bearing the name of the State of South Carolina, this State having the lowest total vote of the group, is given the character C This arrangement will be followed for the cards for all of the States having the same number of electoral votes. For illustration, the States of Nebraska and Maryland each have 8 electoral votes, while the States of Iowa, Kentucky, IVisconsin and Georgia each have 13 electoral votes, and the cards bearing the names of these States are shown in the drawings.

The cards may be of any required size and of any suitable material, but will preferably be of the same size as the ordinary playing cards, and may be arranged as represented in Fig. 2 with the information or data placed at both ends of the card so that it may be read from either end, thus not requiring that the cards shall be arranged in any particular order. This arrangement Will facilitate the handling of the cards and the playing 0f the gaine.

The game is played'ivith a pack of ftytwo cards and the cker, as before described, and if preferred, the joker card may be dispensed with.

The joker card When used ranks as the highest card in the pack, and the gaine may be played by tivo or more persons. The deal determined by cutting the player who cuts the highest card in rank is the one who deals. All of the cards in the pack are dealt out one at a time, giving to each player the same number of cards, and any cards left over are deposited upon the center of the table, face doivn. These cards are to be counted by the person who takes the. first trick. The game is preferably played toward the left. The game is deu termined by the number of points Which the players may choose, using preferably the total number of electoral votes of the United States as a base.

After the deal has been determined and the hands played out, then each player scores the added total number of electoral votes that he has won and the tricks he has taken. Then the deal passes to the left, and so on until the required number of points have been made. The person first securing the points is declared the Winner.

The oker card when used ranks as the highest card and takes any card in the pack. The four cards having the stars rank first, second, third and fourth consecutively. The value of all of the cards are represented by the electoral votes of each State that they represent, except Where there are tivo or more States having the same number of electoral votes. Then, the value of the card or cards is represented by the letters; the one predominating over the other, by the largest total vote cast at the last presidential election is designated by the letter A, the next in rank by the letter B and so on until the tie is exhausted. It is not the intention to have A take B or B take C, Where the predominating card can be determined by the number of votes on these cards. For example: A plays card F-Vermont, four electoral votes, B plays card A-Utah, three electoral votes. In this case F-Vermont, four votes, has precedence over A-`Utah, three votes, for the reason that the F card has one more vote than the A card.

The cards for the improved game can be inexpensively manufactured, as the data thereon is all printed, but if preferred the cards may be lithographed or engraved, or illustrated to any required extent. Preferably the backs of the cards Will loe provided with some distinctive design, such for instance as a representation of Uncle Sam or other national character.

Having thus described our invention, What is claimed as new is:

l. ri card game comprising a deck of cards having thereon the names of the States and rTerritories, the cards Which bear the names of the rTerritories being further provided in progressive order ivith distinctive characters, the cards which bear the names of the States being further provided with numerals denoting the electoral vote thereof, and the cards which bear the same number of electoral votes being also designated by distinctive characters arranged in progressi ve order according to the electoral vote.

A card game comprising a deck of cards having thereon the names of the States and T erritories, and of the District of Columbia, the cards which bear the names of the Territories being` further provided in progressive order with distinctive characters, the cards which bear the names of the States being further provided with numerals denoting the electoral vote thereof, and the cards which bear the same number of electoral votes being also designated by distinct-ive characters arranged in progressive order according to the electoral vote.
