Abstract

Provided is a method for operation of a blast furnace that uses a large volume of fired pellets as the iron-containing starting material, wherein carbon-containing unfired pellets are mixed with fired pellets and introduced in the vicinity of fired pellets of inferior reducing capability in order to eliminate the site of delayed reduction and create a thin melting zone structure near the melting zone inside the furnace, and thereby greatly reduce the starting units of fuel during blast furnace operation. By means of this method wherein iron-containing starting material and coke are alternately introduced in layers from the top of the blast furnace, (i) carbon-containing unfired pellets and fired pellets are premixed and the mixture of carbon-containing unfired pellets and fired pellets is introduced such as to replace a portion of the iron-containing starting material layer, and (ii) the mixture ratio of the carbon-containing unfired pellets and fired pellets is adjusted such that the ratio of starting units used R (kg/tp) of carbon-containing unfired pellets and starting units used P (kg/tp) of fired pellets, or R(kg/tp)/P(kg/tp), is brought between 0.09 and 0.31.
