Abstract

A backlight unit which can be made flat, and which can output white light with a good hue; and a liquid crystal display device equipped with the backlight unit. The backlight of the present invention is equipped with: a sheet-form wavelength conversion member (16) comprising a planar light-emitting section (10) that emits blue light (LB) as excitation light, and a wavelength conversion layer (15) onto which blue light (LB) is incident, which emits light on the longer wavelength side than blue light, and through which part of the blue light passes; a retroreflective member group (20); and a reflective plate (18), wherein the reflectance R as defined by the formula below for blue light in the retroreflective member group (20) exceeds 70%.
