Abstract

A product package for storing nutritional or pharmaceutical products includes a container having a body and an opening, a seal applied to the container to seal the opening, and a closure removably engaged with the container to selectively close the opening of the container. The closure and/or the seal include one or more gripping features to facilitate lifting and/or removing the seal from the container.

Description

Product packaging seal with tearable pull ring

The present invention relates to a seal for a product package, in particular a container and closure. The seal includes tactile features useful for a user to open the container. Seals, closures and containers for product packaging can also be used for beverage products, nutraceuticals and pharmaceuticals, among others. In some product packaging designs, the seal acts as a tamper evident seal to indicate to the user that the container has not been opened prior to the user's first use. One problem with the tamper-evident seal applied to the container is that the seal may make it more difficult to open the container, especially for users with reduced grip. Accordingly, it is desirable to provide a closure of a container having a gripping feature and/or a seal such that the seal does not make it too cumbersome to open the container while providing a tamper evident seal in the intended use of the product.

While various product packages, and in particular closures and/or seals of containers, have been made and used, it is believed that none of the inventions have been made or used prior to the present inventors.

As seen in Figure 2, the closure (100) is removable from the container (200). In the present example, the closure (100) includes a top surface (118), a side wall (102), a lock ring (106), and a sealing disk (107). In some embodiments, the sealing disc (107) is omitted. In such embodiments without a sealing disc (107), the closure (100) can have a closed top surface (118) and the closure (100) can be a single piece. The side wall (102) is larger from the top surface (118) The body extends downwardly and includes a gripping surface (116). The gripping surface (116) includes a plurality of projections (117) that are vertically oriented and generally equally spaced about the circumference of the sidewall (102). The side wall (102) includes an inner surface having a thread corresponding to the thread (202) on the container (200). The threads of the side wall (102) are configured to engage the threads (202) of the container (200) such that the closure (100) can be screwed onto and unscrewed from the container (200). When the closure (100) is tightened onto the container (200), the closure (100) is pulled downward toward the lower flange (208) due to the threaded configuration between the closure (100) and the container (200). When the closure (100) is removed from the container (200), the opposite occurs and the closure (100) is driven upwardly away from the lower flange (208). In certain embodiments, the container (200) and/or the closure (100) does not include threads (202) and instead of a threaded connection, the closure (100) is snap-fitted to the container (200). In view of the teachings herein, those skilled in the art will be aware of the container (200) of the product package (10) and Various other modifications of the closure (100) and features of the container (200) and closure (100).

In some embodiments, a seal (300) is applied to the container (200) to provide tamper resistance to indicate to the user that the container has not been opened prior to the user's first use. As shown in Figure 3, the seal (300) includes a portion (302) and a pull tab (304) extending from the portion (302). The tab (304) is provided as a gripping feature to make it easier to remove the seal (300) from the container (200), especially for users with reduced grip. While the tab (304) is shown as a generally semi-circular extension, those skilled in the art will appreciate other suitable tab (304) shapes (e.g., square, rectangular, triangular, etc.) in view of the teachings herein. The seal (300) is made of aluminum foil or any other suitable material (eg, plastic, paper, etc.). After the seal (300) is removed from the container (200), the seal (300) is thrown away. The seal (300) can vary in size, shape, and/or configuration to couple with the container (200).

As shown in Figure 4, a seal (300) is applied to the container (200). A seal (300) is positioned on the top surface (203) to cover the opening (214) of the container (200). In the current example, the portion (302) covers the opening (214) and extends across the top surface (203) such that the portion (302) folds down onto the sidewall (205) of the neck (212). In some embodiments, the portion (302) is sized to correspond to the size of the opening (214) such that the portion (302) does not fold over the neck (212). Portion (302) of the seal (300) is attached to the container (200), for example, by adhesive attachment, ultrasonic bonding, or some other suitable form of attachment to form a seal around the opening (214). The tab (304) extends from the portion (302) and folds down onto the sidewall (205) of the neck (212). The tab (304) extends beyond the skirt length (303) of the portion (302) to a lower portion of the neck (212). The tab (304) of the seal (300) is not joined to the container (200) to enable a user to lift the tab (304) from the container (200) while the portion (302) remains sealed to the container (200). In some embodiments, a closure (100) is closed over the seal (300) onto the container (200) such that the seal (300) is positioned between the container (200) and the closure (100). In certain embodiments, the closure (100) and/or the seal (300) are modified to include a pull ring (304) that lifts the seal (300) from a container (200) to a second position. Figure 5C shows another exemplary closure (800) having a gripping feature. The tab (810) extends inwardly from the sidewall (802) at an acute angle. The sidewall (802) extends downwardly from the top surface (807) of the closure (800). Each tab (810) extends around only a portion of the sidewall (802), as shown in Figure 5D. Although three tabs (810) are shown, any number of tabs (810) can be used.

As shown in Figure 6A, the closure (700) is positioned over the seal (300) when the closure (700) is coupled to the container (200). The seal (300) is first attached to the container (200) such that the tab (304) is folded over and extends over the neck (212) of the container (200). The closure (700) is then coupled to the closure (700) by rotating the closure (700) onto the container (200) such that the corresponding threads (202, 704) engage each other to close the closure (700) to the container (200) Container (200).
