Abstract

This invention provides an excimer lamp that is placed closely to an illuminated object by a wire maintaining body, and alighting unit equipped with such an excimer lamp. The excimer lamp has a discharge container with an upper and lower surfaces extending along the length direction and with a light emitting gas sealed inside; external electrodes (52, 53) that are installed on the aforementioned upper and lower surfaces; and a wire maintaining body 54 at a tip of the discharging container 51. Its characteristics are as follows. The wire maintaining body 54 is formed by a wire maintaining part 541 to provide electrical insulation and a flat support part 542 that is made of a thin metallic plate. The discharging container 51 is held in place through the wire maintaining part 541 and the flat support part 542. The wire maintaining part 541 keeps a wire 55 electrically connecting an external electrode 52 at a side of the discharging container 51. The flat support part 542 is electrically connected to another external electrode and is pressed against ar flat surface of at the other side of the discharging container 51.
