Abstract

A discharge lamp is provided to prevent breakage of a front end of a light emitting tube of a sustain pipe of the lamp when an electrode is inclined to a down direction of a diameter portion. An encapsulator(8) has a light emitting tube(82) and lateral tubes(81) mounted on both ends of the light emitting tube. A glass member(1) is disposed in the lateral tube, and a metal film(2) is disposed along an outer periphery of the glass member. An electrode core rod(4) extends in the light emitting tube from the lateral tubes. An electrode(9) is installed on a front end of the electrode core rod, and a sustain pipe is disposed between the outer periphery of the electrode core rod and the inner periphery of the lateral plate. The sustain pipe has a small diameter portion(64), a large-diameter portion(63), and a taper portion(65) connecting the small-diameter portion with the large-diameter portion.
