Abstract

This invention provides an ink cartridge that, even when held for a long period of time, for example, during the distribution of goods or in such a state is mounted in a recording device, causes no significant change in a drive pulse, causes no significant change in output images, exhibits satisfactory delivery properties and printing durability, causes no significant temperature rise upon printing, and can form good images stably. The ink cartridge comprises a thermal ink jet head provided with a heat generating part for generating thermal energy for delivering ink through a delivery port and stores an ink. The ink cartridge is characterized in that a protective layer containing at least one compound selected from the group consisting of oxides, nitrides, and carbides of silicon is provided on a face where the heat generating part comes into contact with the ink, the ink contains a material, which dissolves the protective layer, and a polycarboxylic acid or its salt of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, ammonium, or a primary, secondary, tertiary amine salt, or the like and the content (X; % by mass) of the polycarboxylic acid or its salt of an alkali metal or an alkaline earth metal, ammonium, or a primary, secondary, tertiary amine salt, or the like satisfies 1 ≤ X ≤ 30.
