Abstract
1,218,712. Treating vinyl alcohol copolymers with sultones. RHONE-POULENC S.A. 6 May, 1969 [6 May, 1968], No. 23182/69. Heading C3P. A copolymer of vinyl alcohol with one or more ethylenically unsaturated monomers which is partially etherified by substituted or unsubstituted organic radicals terminated by an SO 2 .OH group may be prepared by reacting the copolymer in solution with one or more sultones. The copolymer may be also partially crosslinked by >CH-O-CH< linkages. In the examples an ethylene-vinyl alcohol copolymer and a vinyl chloride-vinyl alcohol copolymer are treated with spirobi-2: 2<SP>1</SP>-propanesultone and propanesultone in hexamethylphosphotriamide and membranes of the polymer cast from the solutions.
