Abstract

A permanent magnet synchronous motor is disclosed that has a rotor with a top yoke and a bottom yoke. A permanent magnet is mounted to at least one of the top yoke and the bottom yoke. An air gap is formed between the permanent magnet and the other of the top yoke and the bottom yoke. Armature windings are located in the air gap such that, in use, an electromagnetic field in the air gap is distributed axially.
