Abstract

The method involves determining the shape of tree trunks, which are conveyed through a measuring device. The measuring device has one or more pairs of co-operating measurement ramps arranged on opposite sides of the conveyed tree trunk. The measurement ramps carry measurement elements connected to a data unit. The measurement elements comprise transmitters of a selected electromagnetic radiation and associated receivers. In the diameter measuring range which corresponds to the greatest branch diameter to be measured, the measuring ramps run in parallel measurement beams. In each ramp pair, two measurement beams form tangent beams. With at least one measurement ramp, inclined measurement beams are transmitted. These slope towards conveyed tree trunks and form an obtuse angle with a main measuring direction of the ramp pair. One or more of these inclined beams form one or more additional tangential beams.
