Abstract

PURPOSE: To ensure easy attachment to an engine block by fixing a retainer insert for receiving a polymerized elastomeric seal body to a plastic retainer by ultrasonic welding or the like in a crankshaft seal assembly. CONSTITUTION: A seal assembly 10 of a rear crankshaft 22 comprises a retainer 16, a retainer insert 18, and a seal portion 20 made of polymerized elastomeric material, fixed to the mounting surface 14 of an engine block 12 by a fastening bolt 92. The seal portion 20 which has a seal lip 40 and a dirt lip 42 is attached to the retainer insert, and a garter spring 44 imposes the seal lip 40 to be radially compressed around the crankshaft 22. The retainer insert 18 and the retainer 16, which are both made from a synthetic plastic material, are engaged by ultrasonic welding in a mechanically secure, fluid-tight relation. This ensures each attachment of the seal assembly which eliminates the need to machine a counterbore in the end of the engine block.
