Abstract

A covering agent which is intended to be applied to the surface of an open metal smelt in order to reduce the loss of heat from the smelt, which consists of a mixture of pearlite and burnt dolomite or burnt magnesite. Preferably, the pearlite grains have been expanded by means of heating, and, furthermore, the covering agent consists of a mechanical mixture. The pearlite grains can also be provided with a coating which consists of quicklime, and/or magnesium oxide, and/or calcium aluminate.
