Abstract

A process is described for identification of microorganisms, especially bacteria, in which the microorganisms in an isolate thereof on a solid nutrient medium are removed from a portion of the surface of the nutrient medium; liquid containing extracellular enzyme secreted from the microorganisms is collected from the exposed surface by means of an absorbent material; and substrate is added to the absorbent material with absorbed liquid, after which a possible substrate/enzyme reaction is determined. The process can be used for diagnosis of bacteria such as Legionella sp. in a biological sample.
