Abstract

A dishwasher is provided with a tank (1) intended for washing liquid, the tank having a spillway overflow (8) and an outlet connected to a pump (2). The pump is in flow communication (3, 4) with spray arms (5, 6) disposed above the tank (1) and, by the location of the spray arms (5, 6) during operation, lowers the level of the washing liquid in the tank (1) from the level (A) to the level (B) beneath the spillway overflow (8). In order to prevent unintentional loss of washing liquid because of frothing in the tank (1) on operation of the pump (2), the spillway overflow (8) is provided with a float valve (10) which closes the spillway overflow (8) at the lower liquid level (B) and which opens the spillway overflow at the higher level (A). The float valve (10) is tubular and is slidable upwardly and downwardly on a pipe which which forms the spillway overflow (8) and is provided, at its upper end, with apertures (12) to allow the entry of washing liquid.
