Abstract

An apparatus designed to check the validity of credit cards (1) and similar payment cards, which apparatus includes at least one memory card (7) containing coded up-to-date information on which credit cards are invalid at a certain moment, and an electronic unit (3). The latter comprises a reader unit (5) which scans the magnetic code stripe to register at least the account number of the credit card being checked, and a microprocessor (8) which is arranged to read the information contained in the memory card (7) regarding invalid credit cards (1) and to compare this information with that contained in the card (1) being checked. A display (6) is provided to indicate the validity or invalidity status of the card inserted into the apparatus.
