Abstract

Process comprises (i) prodn. in a gasification chamber (I), by partial oxidn. of a (hydro)carbonaceous fuel with an oxidant, of a reducing gas contg. mainly CO, H2, CO2 and H2O, which leaves (I) at a temp. above the m.pt. of any slag produced; (ii) conversion of the gas from (I), in a shaft (II) full of lumpy carbonaceous material, to a reducing gas contg. mainly CO and H2; (iii) adjustment of the gas temp. to that required in step (iv); (iv) feeding the gas to a shaft furnace (III) contg. the oxidic material for redn. in countercurrent flow to that material; and (v) removing practically all water and dust from the partly spent gas leaving (III), and using the major part of that gas as fuel.
