Abstract

The direct current fed light-arc furnace is for direct reduction of metal oxides in powder form, such as iron, nickel, cobalt and/or oxides of metals within the iron group of the periodical system. The furnace comprises a container with at least one hollow electrode (2) connected as cathode, and at least one anode-connected bottom contact (4) or base electrode. In the bath periphery, in or at the furnace bottom and/or in one or more holes (7) in the base electrode (4) are fitted nozzles (6,8) for blowing gas into the smelt. One, or even all of the nozzles are formed as concentric oxygen units with water vapour or hydrocarbon gas blown in concentrically around the oxygen for protective purposes.
