Abstract

A method and a device for the reliable identification of paper rolls in a paper mill are described by means of which fully automatic marking of paper rolls at the longitudinal cutter or rewinder and automatic reading of the marking generated on the unpackaged roll is made possible. The customer rolls to be produced are provided with a bar code by applying ink or a similar marking substance to the edge of an unrolled paper web (W), in such a manner that at the end face of the roll (27) formed from the web (W), a bar code formed from concentric code rings (R1...R6) is produced which is later read. The device for carrying out the method exhibits a drive device (32) adapted to the blades (30) of a longitudinal cutter (11a, 11b), which device is connected via an arm (34) or the like to an ink pad (31) and which, due to the influence of a pulse coming from a computer system (33), presses an ink pad (33) or the like against the side of the blades (32) of the longitudinal cutter. <IMAGE>
