Abstract

A method of treating a water-containing fuel containing colloidal and chemically-bound water, including dewatering the fuel to a water content within a given range prior to preheating the fuel, feeding the fuel into and through a preheating chamber, causing heated water at a pressure which prevents boiling of the water to flow in countercurrent with the fuel mass in the preheating chamber and to at least substantially depart from the preheating chamber, thereby heating the fuel mass by displacing water present in the fuel mass by the heated water, feeding the heated fuel mass to a reaction chamber and supplying water heated to a temperature such that the fuel is heated to a temperature of 150-210.degree.C and colloidal water present in the fuel is completely released while the chemicallybound water in the fuel is substantially retained, and removing water from the thus obtained fuel product.
