Abstract

A closed section tire 10 has a carcass ply 12 the cords 16 of which are inclined to the circumferential direction of the tire in the base 14 and crown 20 of the tire and are substantially radial in the sidewalls 18, 19, the cord angle in the base 14 being greater than and opposite to that in the crown 20, and a crown reinforcing ply 28 being provided with cords 31 at an angle lower than and opposite to that of the cords 16 in the crown. One or more inextensible hoops 23 may be provided in the base 14 to enhance retention of the tire on a rim, but may be eliminated if the tire is bonded to the rim. The tire may be built by winding an inner liner 32, the carcass ply 12, and outer rubber 18, 19 on a tire building drum or a rim to form a cylindrical blank in which the cords 16 are at less than 90 DEG to the circumference, folding the edges of the blank inwardly to form a flattened tube, adding the ply 28 and a tread, and finally placing the assembly in a curing mould and inflating the tube through a valve 34, the inflation causing the cords 16 to adopt the form shown in Fig. 1. <IMAGE>
