Abstract
PROCESS FOR THE PRODUCTION OF CHROMONE-2-CARBOXYLIC ACIDS There is described a process for the production of a compound of formula I, I in which R5, R6, R7 and R8, which may be the same or different, are each hydrogen, hydroxy or alkyl, or an adjacent pair of R5, R6, R7 and R8 represent a -(CH2)4- chain, and pharmaceutically acceptable derivatives thereof, which comprises selectively oxidising a compound of formula II, II in which R5, R6, R7 and R8 are as defined above, R represents a -COOH group or a group hydrolysable thereto, and R1 and R2 represent a variety of groups. The compounds of formula I are useful as pharmaceuticals, e.g. for the treatment of asthma.
