Abstract
An emulsion for flushing organs to be transplanted is described, which contains perfluorinated hydrocarbons, dispersed in water, and additionally a non-toxic emulsifier. It must contain a total of more than 40% by volume of water. The perfluorinated materials are the perfluorination products of either (1) polycyclic hydrocarbons having at least two bridge head carbon atoms linked to each other via a bridge containing at least one carbon atom and which are not adamantane, or (2) methyladamantane, ethyladamantane, ethylmethyladamantane, ethyldimethyladamantane or triethyladamantane. These perfluorination products have an excellent dissolving capacity for oxygen and carbon dioxide and they form highly stable emulsions with good resistance to the high shearing forces which are applied to the emulsions when they flow through apparatuses which load the emulsions with the necessary oxygen, which they transport to the organs to be transplanted. The emulsions permit organs which are to be transplanted to be stored for a long time, and when, on the other hand, part of the emulsions reaches the human body as the organs through which the emulsions flow are transplanted, they are not toxic there and are excreted again after some time by way of respiration and via the skin.
