1474224 Laminates AVERY PRODUCTS CORP 9 Sept 1974 [26 Sept 1973 9 Aug 1974] 39251/74 Heading B5N [Also in Division B8] A label construction 10 comprises a selfsupporting film 16 having a translucent portion, a pressure-sensitive adhesive layer 18 on a bottom surface of the film and so distributed as to provide non-adhesive, translucent zone 20, 22 in the film for receiving indicia, a release support 12 in contact with the adhesive layer, an indicia-transferring layer 28 secured to the support, and an indicia-receptive layer 37, Fig. 3, on the indicia-receiving zones, the zones allowing indicia 31, Fig. 2, to be transferred from the transferring layer to the receptive layer in response to pressure applied to a top surface of the film. The film may be fabricated from cellulosic materials, ethylenic polymers, propylene polymers, acrylic polymers or other suitable polymers. The top surface of the film can be provided with a matte coating 32 for receiving ink overprinting without smearing. The indicia-transferring layer 28 may comprise carbon paper or a hot-stamp leaf. The imagereceptive layer 37 is preferably a silica filler in a suitable carrier medium and produces a roughened surface below the zones to allow indicia to be transferred without smearing. A heat or solvent activated adhesive may be included in the layer 37. The construction can be made tamperproof by including a patterned mask (38), Fig. 4 (not shown), between the film 16 and adhesive layer 18. The adhesion of the mask to the film 16 is minimal and less than that of the mask to the adhesive layer which preferably has two adhesive surfaces. Attempted removal of the film from a substrate causes a portion of the indicia 40 and a portion of the adhesive layer to be removed with the film and break up the image. In a further embodiment, Fig. 5 (not shown), invisible ultraviolet brighteners (42) are added to the layer 37 and laid down in a pattern for ease of detection when tampering is suspected. A pressuresensitive overlay (44), Fig. 6 (not shown), may be secured to the top of the film to serve as a secondary information label or for record keeping purposes. In another embodiment, Fig. 7, the overlay is replaced by a non-adhesivebacked overlay 48 which is placed over a series of labels 10 with pin feed holes 49 registering with holes 14 on the release support 12 for feeding through a computer printer. Performations 50, 52 are provided on the overlay to separate the latter into labels for record keeping purposes. In an alternative embodiment, Fig. 8 (not shown), the layer 28 has two carbon surface layers (36) to allow information to be printed directly on to a copy (58) located beneath the layer and underimprinted into the zones of the film 16. In place of the carbon paper strip 28, the surface of a computer print-out sheet may be selectively coated with a carbon film corresponding to the zones of the film.
