Abstract

1432694 Treating wood E G L ERIKSSON 27 April 1973 [27 April 1972] 20160/73 Heading D1P Wood is treated with a condensate solution of formaldehyde and/or paraformaldehyde in phenol or a substituted phenol, the solution subsequently being hardened in the presence of a condensing agent e.g. an acid or alkaline vapour. The solution is substantially free of other solvents. Preferably the heat treatment is effected While contacting the wood with the vapour, e.g. gaseous ammonia. Alternatively, the condensing agent may be present in the treatment solution, and may be a salt of a strong acid, e.g. ammonium chloride or aluminium chloride. The treatment is carried out at elevated temperature. The treatment may be at atmospheric pressure, a slight over-pressure or at elevated pressure, to cause the agent to penetrate the wood. The wood may be pinewood or spruce boards, plywood, veneer, telegraph or fencing poles, railway sleepers or surface chips for chipboards. In the latter case the solution may be applied by spraying.
