Apparatus for contacting a gas or vapour with a liquid or another gas or vapour comprises a housing 10 within which is mounted on a shaft 3 a rotatable frusto-conical chamber 1 to which the fluid media to be contacted are fed via concentric tubes 4 and 5. the chamber 1 having at its upper end a peripheral slot 8 through which the fluid media being contacted move outwardly as the chamber is rapidly rotated. When one of the fluids is a liquid the liquid is introduced through the tube 5 and the base of the housing serves a sump for separated liquid and from which liquid may be recirculated through the chamber 1 or withdrawn via pipe 13. In modifications there may be a common inlet tube for the fluid media to be contacted and the peripheral slot may be sub-divided by radially extending partitions. In a further modification the rotatable chamber may be of double frusto-conical form the peripheral slot being formed between an upper and lower section of the chamber where it has its greatest diameter. The apparatus may be used for washing dust-laden gas or for atomising a liquid fuel into a stream of air.
