Abstract
1,070,179. Catheters. BRUNSWICK CORPORATION. April 13, 1966 [April 15, 1965], No. 16206/66. Heading A5R. An airway suction catheter comprises a flexible elastomeric elongated tube having a distal end and a proximal end, a suction control aperture in the peripheral wall of the tube in the region of the proximal end, and a flexible sleeve fricionally engaging the tube and movable relative to the tube to cover, partially cover or uncover the suction control aperture thereby to control the amount of suction administered to a patient. The flexible sleeve preferably is adapted to be rolled upon the tube thus to provide the relative movement between the tube and the sleeve. As illustrated in Figure 1, airway suction catheter tube 10 has a proximal end 12, which end may be inserted in a tube 15 connected to a suction device, for example a suction pump (not shown), and a distal end 14 having an end opening 17 and an opening 18 in the peripheral wall. A longitudinally extending line 16 of X-ray-opaque material may be embedded in the wall of the catheter tube, a further aperture 19 in the wall of the tube at the distal end thereof interrupting the X-ray-opaque line and serving as an aid to the location of the distal end of the tube. A flexible and movable sleeve 20, for example of latex rubber, frictionally grips the external surface of the catheter tube to cover a control aperture 21 formed in the distal slope of the fusiform section 11 adjacent the proximal end of the catheter tube, the sleeve being adapted to be rolled back upon itself to form a ring and to uncover the suction control aperture, and to be unrolled from this position either to partially cover or to completely cover (as shown in Figure 1) the suction control aperture. When the sleeve is rolled upon itself, the ring preferably applies sufficient pressure to create around the catheter tube a circular indentation having a semi-permanent set and serving to limit the rolling of the sleeve. The catheter may be packaged, with the sleeve rolled to form the ring, in a sterile container.
