Abstract
1,172,055. Removing guard hairs from pelts and furs. ROHM & HAAS G.m.b. H. Feb. 28, 1968 [March 3, 1967], No.9716/68. Heading C6C. In a process for removing guard hairs from pelts such as nutria, musquash, beaver and seal furs, the pelts are treated, e. g. for 2 to 7 hours, with at least one proteolytic enzyme until substantially all the guard hairs, but no other hairs, are loosened, and the guard hairs are then plucked out. The treatment with the proteolytic enzyme or enzymes may be effected in an approximately neutral to weakly alkaline aqueous medium, e.g. having a pH between 6 and 9, and preferably containing a non-ionic wetting agent based on glycol ethers. The pelts may be treated, on their flesh sides, with the proteolytic enzyme or enzymes in the form of a powder or aqueous paste. Suitable proteolytic enzymes are: bacterial proteases produced by Bacillus subtilis, and fungal proteases produced by Aspergillus oryzae or flavus. When the guard hairs have been plucked out, the pelts may be treated with formaldehyde to de-activate the enzyme or enzymes.
